Maia's POV
The classroom is built like a theater hall with cascading rows of chairs. I'm seated in the sixth row, and the professor is on a podium far below. I am literally looking down at her.
She said her name was something like Tarah, or Tera, I'm not sure I remember correctly. And then she started narrating about the history of politics or something. From there, I kinda just lost her, or she lost me.
For a small town, this class is quite big and quite crowded. I really assumed there'd be a lot fewer students than I see here.
Then, there's this girl seated on my right side. She's wearing glasses and a short white dress with blue spots on it. I don't know what her deal is, she keeps glancing at me from time to time, and then looking away when she sees me looking at her.
So weird. And her dress is super short, like half her thigh is visible. Just then, as I notice her dress, she looks up again and we lock eyes.
This time she doesn't look away, but instead smiles slightly at me. I force a smile back at her, and then look away, down to the professor below.
The weird girl doesn't stop there, she moves up two seats and comes to sit right next to me. I can smell the strong perfume she's wearing. It's not just that, my Lycan also senses her beastly nature. She's seated so close to me I can smell the wolf on her. She's a werewolf.
"You must be new here," she says softly, and I turn sideways to glance at her.
"What makes you say that?" I growl.
"Locksbridge is a small town," she says.
"That small, huh?" I wonder.
"Yeah, everybody here kinda knows everybody," she adds, and then turns on her seat to face me, "I'm Alexa..."
"And you are a werewolf," I interrupt her speech, hoping to surprise her.
She doesn't act surprised. She just smiles and keeps staring at me.
"And so are you," she says.
Wait, what? She thinks I'm a werewolf? Why the hell would she think that?
But I suppose that's a good thing. If I can pass off as a werewolf, and the way this town is full of them, then I might just fit in here.
Also, keeping the secret of what I really am is kinda what we always do. My kind are never really welcomed in any social setting. Since we are so rare, and extremely powerful, we tend to stand out, and people don't like that very much. It threatens them.
So we are shunned, hated, and sometimes even hunted. Which is why my parents are always so keen on reminding me to never reveal to anyone what we are. It's just the three of us, like it has always been. We are our own pack, just the three of us. Mom, Dad and I.
"Sure thing..." I answer Alexa, smiling slightly, "Your wolf senses must be as heightened as mine.. My name is Maia," I add, my smile is now turning genuine, for some reason.
"Nice to meet you Maia," she says.
Just as Alexa is talking, some other girl walks past, right in front of us. She is walking recklessly and knocks my knee hard as she passes. I lift my hand quickly and grab her bag, pulling it down.
"You... Watch where you are going!" I growl at her.
She doesn't speak. She only pulls her bag back and turns around, snarling fiercely at me and showing me her canines.
I let go of her bag, not because she scared me or anything. I can just see she's trouble, and I'd rather avoid making a scene.
She walks all the way down towards the doors. Her heels are calling everyone's attention to her as she walks out, even before class is over. It looks like the attention is what she was going for.
"That's Ashley," Alexa says, while the whole class watches. "If I were you I'd keep my wits about me with that one."
"And why is that?" I frown.
"Rumor has it that she is Ron's mate, and possible future Luna of Riverden pack, my pack." Alexa says.
"Who's Ron?"
"Wow, you really are new here," Alexa sighs, "Ron is our Alpha's only son, and his alpha ceremony is actually coming up. He's kinda of a big deal around here..." Alexa continues.
Just before she's finished speaking, the professor announces from below... "Alright that's it for our first class people, see you all next week." she finishes, picks up her books and leaves.
"Do you have another class?" Alexa says, her eyes peeking at me from above her glasses.
"I do, in fact," I answer, looking at my phone, "It's in an hour."
"Sociology?" she says.
"Yes?" I answer, burrowing my brows.
"Perfect, I have the same class, we'll go together," She says and stands up, "Come on, let's get out of here."
I think Alexa is okay. And I could really use a friend right now.

Ron's POV
I take the turn around the school's water fountain and pull over into an empty parking space at the far side. As soon as the car stops, I pull my keys out and open the door, stepping outside, then banging the door back into place.
Students are crawling all over the campus compound. Some seated on concrete benches, others standing and chatting, while others seem to be hurrying to class.
Wow, this is so not like highschool, where everybody was always doing the same thing, at the same time. If it was class time, it was class time for all.
By this time I've arrived, I'm sure the first class already passed me by. But no fuss, I'll just catch the next one.
Besides, I'm only here because Dad said he would have people spying on me and reporting to him if I don't show up for my classes. At least, if I attend one, then I'll have something to defend myself with.
As I'm walking towards the building entrance I suddenly catch a whiff of this powerful scent. It's overwhelming the entire space around me, and my wolf can't avoid its unique fragrance.
I sniff, locating the direction it's coming from, and quickly turn around. It smells like... And I can't believe I'm saying this, bliss. It smells like bliss. Like harmony, and power.
And wait, it's not just a scent, there's an aura, and a powerful one at that. My father taught me how to detect auras, and I can tell this one is something new. Something I've never felt before in my town.
And the way it's pulling me... What the hell is that.
I continue sniffing like a helpless hound, following the scent around, before I look up and see an ice cream truck. There are a bunch of girls surrounding it, some buying ice cream, and others enjoying it beside the truck.
Ah, whatever. To hell with whatever that was. I have more important things to do, like making sure I get to that stupid first class.
I turn away from the ice cream truck, and rush across the flagstoned floor, entering into the campus buildings, and off to find the venue of my class.

Maia's POV
"Did you feel that?"
"Feel what?" Alexa mumbles, licking the ice cream from her tiny spoon, then looking at me in surprise.
"There was something in the air," I defend.
I swear I just felt an attention. A presence of some sort, like something was onto me, or looking at me. It was so strange. And it lasted for only a minute and it was gone.
Or maybe it's all these werewolves and their heightened sensibilities. Maybe I just picked up on one of them.
Oh, or maybe it was a vampire. I remember mom said there are vampires in this town. Maybe that's how it feels like to be close to one.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Alexa continues, the surprise still on her face.
"You know what, never mind," I deflect her off the subject.
I lower my own spoon into the container in my other hand and scoop, lifting up and licking the deliciousness onto my tongue.
"So where are you from?" Alexa asks.
She and I are now walking towards an empty bench on the campus grounds. We come up to it and sit down, as we continue to munch on the ice cream.
"Well, my parents and I have moved a lot over the years," I start.
I feel free with Alexa. Freer than I have ever felt with any one. Sure, I've had friends before, in other towns, but they were all human. And I always had to hide a part of myself from them.
But with her, I feel like I've actually found somebody who could understand me, because she is kinda like me in a way. Despite not being exactly all the way like me.
Alexa and I chat and chat, giggling and laughing all that ice cream away. It's like we just clicked, she and I.
She even ends up inviting me to this werewolf party that's going down some place tonight. I really have never been to a town with all these kinds of beasts like me. I have no idea what to expect.
But Alexa makes it sound like it's going to be insanely fun.
