Chapter 11

"Let's go somewhere more private to talk." Natalia haughtily declared. "Why?" Serah demanded. "We can talk here as well." "I wasn't asking you!" She spat. Serah crossed her arms. "I don't have much time to waste arguing with you, so we'll just speak here and settle this pointless dispute once and for all." Natalia scoffed. "Is it because you're scared? You think we won't dare hurt you when in the open like this?" "No." Serah reasoned but the girls had already taken to laughing at her. "How naive of you!" One of them sneered. "There's nothing and no one in this world who'll ever be able to protect you from us." "We can do whatever we want and won't suffer any consequences." Another one added. Serah barely held back from rolling her eyes at their taunts. Didn't they realize how lame they all sounded? "Since you won't move, then we'll settle our scores here." Natalia stated. She advanced forward until her face was right in front of Serah's, a killing glare in her eyes. "It wasn't enough that you disrespected me this morning, you dare try to seduce Gareth as well? Who do you think you are?" Her face visibly reddened in fury as she hollered the words. "I didn't try to seduce him, okay?" Serah said impatiently. "And you dare deny it?" She spat. "Are you taking me for a joke?" "Decent words won't work on such people, Natalia." One of her groupies said. "That's right." Another voice rang out from behind Serah. "For brainless idiots like her, it's better to show her the consequences of her actions right away." Serah turned to regard the new girl who had joined them, her brows creasing when she noticed the huge bucket she carried. "What is that?" She demanded, even as her sense of trepidation mounted. The girl smirked. "You'll soon have a first-hand experience." A strong smell hit Serah and it dawned on her, sending her heart in a panic. Before she had time to react, the other girls had already advanced on her and restrained her movements. "You should have thought twice before trying to cross me." Natalia haughtily declared. "This is the first taste of the hell which awaits you during your stay here." Serah tried her best to fight off the girls' hold but they were surprisingly stronger than she thought and couldn't be budged in the least. Her widened eyes remained glued to the bucket filled to the brim as the girl kept approaching her, an evil smirk on her face. Then she lifted the thing like it weighed nothing at all and splashed the contents onto Serah. Her restrainers released her at the last second, the suddenness combined with the wave of cold liquid, causing her to lose her balance. In her disorientation, Serah's eyes opened on their own accord and she couldn't hold back the scream which left her throat. Her hands were at her now unseeing eyes, trying to rub off the burning liquid which assaulted them. Alcohol… they had splashed very concentrated alcohol at her and every inch of her skin felt like it was on fire, especially her eyes. She could hear the girls' cackles resounding around her, but she barely registered it, being currently more concerned with getting back to her feet. Her vision was but a mass of blurry forms and she couldn't make out anything. She tried moving forward but her foot knocked against a surface and she fell down once again. Her clumsiness caused the raucous laughter around her to intensify. She couldn't believe those girls! Using such a means to bully her. She could lose her vision because of this! She felt her way around, desperate for something which will help her remove the burning from her eyes. Her tears were overflowing, but not even this helped in any way. "I'll let you go at this for today." Natalia declared from above her. "But I'm warning you! If you value your life, you'd better stay the hell away from Gareth from now on! Do not come within even a metre from him. In the meantime, I'll make sure everyone tortures you and all those close to you until you have no choice but to leave this school." Serah had given up trying to walk away. She kept bumping into things and probably earned several nasty bruises. She tried to hold back the urge to rub at her eyes, willing her tear ducts to become more active so they could wash all the alcohol from her eyes. But so far it all seemed fruitless. "We'll let her go with just this?" One of the girls exclaimed. "But look how pathetic she looks!" Another one added scornfully. "We could just use this opportunity to end her. Then we can rid this school from her annoying presence right away." "You have a point." Natalia gleefully commented. "Why wait when we can get rid of her right away." Serah steeled herself for their next actions but another voice suddenly boomed out and everything seemed to freeze. "What the hell is going on there?" She recognized the voice as Asher's and the girls confirmed her suspicions immediately after. "Crap, why is Asher interfering? What should we do now?" "We should just leave for now." Natalia said, her voice reluctant. "It seems luck is on your side for today Serah. But next time we won't let you get away no matter what! Be prepared!" Serah blinked her eyes repeatedly, trying to at least get a notion of her surroundings, but her vision seemed to have grown worse and she was beginning to fear it was forever impaired. She could only listen as their steps hurried away and another lone one steadily grew closer to her. How annoying that he had to witness her in such a pathetic state. In an attempt at holding on to her pride, she got to her feet once again and tried stepping away. But to her frustration, she knocked against something yet again and her body toppled over. This time, however, instead of connecting with the hard ground, she crashed against a warm surface. Strong arms wrapped around her, holding her steady and even in her state, she relished the feel of his touch. "Are you okay?" His deep voice resonated from right next to her ear and she couldn't hold back her shiver. "I can't see a thing." She mumbled, trying to step back. "I need to find a water faucet." He cursed aloud but didn't release his hold on her. She was about to ask him to let go, but only a gasp left her mouth when she felt herself being lifted into his arms. "What are you doing?" She demanded. "Relax, stop moving." He said levelly, tightening his hold on her. Then she felt him walking away and she was helpless to do anything but blink through the blur which occupied her vision. Even though her eyes were impaired, she could feel his burning gaze on her the whole time. His presence was strangely reassuring and she found herself relaxing in his hold.
