He walked into the venue like he owned the damn place and what was worse was my boss greeting him like he was someone VERY important. I stood frozen not expecting to see him here, of all the places! It was one thing seeing him in my office, it was my turf, but seeing him here, where there are hundreds of affluent people… it unsettled me.
“Excuse me” I escaped to the washrooms before he laid his eyes on me. Standing in front of the mirror, looking at how flushed I was, I wanted to run away from this damn place and go into that happy bubble of mine where my past never touched me, but there was a much important cause that needed my attention tonight “Just for tonight!”
That whispered courage faded when I saw another part of my past waiting in the deserted hallway outside the bathroom “Fu@k my luck!” I cussed to myself and at my bad luck as I tried to walk past him only to have him block my way “Move or I will scream” I knew that my warning was no good.
He chuckled trapping me against the wall “I dare you to scream” he called out her bluff and was satisfied when he saw her scowling muttering curses under her breath “Thought so!”
Knowing that she had no way to escape and that she would not call for help considering the venue, guests and the event they were at, he took a step closer to her while she stood her ground. There was no way in hell that she was going to let him intimidate her, she was done being scared.
Anya folded her hands over her chest glaring at him and daring him to take another step closer, but he was never one to submit, so he kept stepping into her till they were just a breath apart “You have changed!” the temptation to touch her, to feel the softness of her skin was too much, but he knew that he lost that right a long time back.
Tucking his hands in his slack pockets he let his eyes take her in while she scoffed putting on the best poker face he ever saw and this indifference from her stung more than anything. This was the same woman who loved him once and was willing to give her life, but he just had to fu@k it all up for some pus$y that was not even worth what he lost.
“Everyone, everything changes, time and circumstances do that” Anya was not the same woman she was two years ago, and she definitely was not the same Anya he knew. She had changed… a lot and was more alluring, more confident and a sharper tongue.
He heaved a sigh knowing that he did this, he is the reason she changed, and he is the one that tore them apart with his infidelity. He took the most wonderful thing that ever happened to him for granted and he paid a heavy price by losing the one good thing, no, the best thing in his life “I fu@ked up!”
“You think!” she must have gone crazy to stand here and talk to him while she had important things to think about “You know what, I am not doing this with you. Not here, not now, and definitely not like this!” she hissed and tried to move past him, but he stepped in her way each time “David!” she called his name in a warning narrowing her eyes.
“Anya” his tone was light and playful, talking to her like everything is alright between them even though that was not the case, but she was right, this was not the place to do this, so he took a step back but was still crowding her “Five minutes, that is all I am asking for, five minutes of your time”.
“What is left to talk about, David? What could you possibly want to speak to me about? If you want to talk about how you fu@ked behind my back enjoyed fu@king me over… I think I will pass!” she tried to step past him, again, failing as he stepped in her way, again.
She grew balls, he could see that “Please, just five minutes”.
He was persistent, she would give him that. If giving him five minutes will get him off her back, then why not “Fine. Five minutes. This Saturday at Café Bruno’s on 9th and Main”. She said begrudgingly before shouldering past him into the auction.
Her mind occupied with the question ‘How the hell did he get inside the auction?’ She stepped back inside the main hall only to realize that there was another surprise waiting for her and she was going to be stuck with this one for a whole lot more than just five minutes “Welcome everyone” it was her boss Mr. McGuire who took the centre stage.
He gave his speech but there was a bomb waiting for her at the end of his little speech “This is John Ray, Founder, and CEO of Xailoe Fin Enterprise. He is a visionary and a pioneer when it comes to business and when he told me that he wants to expand his business in New York and would like to merge with my company ‘MoneyGrowth Inc.’ I was like, hell yes! And it was time for me to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the business world. So, let me introduce you to the new CEO of MoneyGrowth Inc, John Ray”.
Everyone started clapping their hands while Anya’s heart went on a rollercoaster ride and not a good one “Holy fu@king sh!t!” she mumbled to herself. She wanted to get away, but this was Mr. McGuire’s party and there was no way she would walk away from her responsibility.
“What happened?” Whitney whispered to her friend seeing her go pale at the sight of a hot billionaire, no, not billionaire, he was a blo*dy fu@king trillionaire. Whitney’s eyes darted between John and Anya, and she knew instantly that they have a history that is not good “You know him?” her voice gave out how surprised she was.
Anya sighed lowering her head “‘Know’ would be an understatement!”
Whitney looked at John and this time found him staring at her friend with heat in his eyes and a promise that made Whitney shudder and she wished she had a man looking at her that way “He is staring at you! Babe, he is basically fu@king you with his eyes right now! Oh god!”
“Shhh… God… you are loud!” she tried to get her friend to come back down to earth from whatever dreamland she was in and that lovey - dovey eyes that she was giving John made her feel a little green with jealousy when she should not “I am not the only one he is fu@king with his eyes… look”.
Whitney looked at John and found him staring at a table where a busty brunette was giving him the come – fu@k – me look but what she failed to see was the man that was sitting at that very same table and he was staring at her best friend in the exact same way that John was looking at her a few seconds ago “Babe, that look... says don’t – fu@k – with – me!”
It was then that Anya noticed his gaze and when she followed it, she knew who got his attention “Fu@k me!” she muttered under her breath and watched the lasers both the men were sending each other while they were no different from the other. One broke her heart and the other broke her trust “Fu@king men!”
“Fu@king HOTTTT men!” Whitney said dreamily with her hands placed below her chin.
Anya wanted to smack the back of her friend’s head “Did you catalogue the items that are being auctioned?” Anya turned her attention to Aiden who was seated next to her but was oblivious to the girl’s conversation.
“Uhh… yeah… yeah… I did and everything is accounted for except for this one item” he took out his phone and flipped through pulling up a photo.
“Isn’t this… from the Robertson family?” she handed his phone back to him “Did you get any word from your team handling the catalogue?”
“Not ye…” just then his phone pinged “It’s here, if you will excuse me, I will have a check and be back in about five minutes”.
As he was about to get up Anya placed her hand on his “I will come with you” he looked a little surprised as to why she would want to leave her new boss’s speech and come with him. Well, if she is willing to take this big risk to come with him, he would make the most of it.
They both got up and left for backstage where all the auction items were lined up and were ready to be taken on stage when called for “Where is it?” Anya was a little worried not seeing the antique gun that was donated by the Robertson family.
“It was just brought in, so it must still be in the black room where it is being checked for its authenticity. Come on” he guided her to the room that had two security guards stationed. Aiden showed his ID and they let them in, the appraiser just finished authenticating the item before taking it outside the black room.
As the room emptied and they were supposed to step out too, Aiden grabbed Anya’s wrist and held her back “Aiden what are you…” she could not finish her sentence as Aiden placed his finger on her lips shushing her.
“Come on, I want to show you something” he guided her further inside the room. There was an item that was donated by the Bennet family, not as an auction item but as a gift.
“Oh. My. God!” she looked at the antique brooch studded with rubies and emeralds. It was beautiful “Isn’t this being auctioned?”
Aiden shrugged his broad shoulders “Mrs. Bennet said that this is a gift, I initially thought of putting it up for auction but thought that this” he picked up the brooch and went around Anya tucking it in her hair “looks better on you than sitting inside someone’s glass display collecting dust”.
“Ai… Aiden… I could…” he cut her off by turning her around to face him.
“It looks beautiful on you, trust me” his tone was low as he clasped her shoulder with one hand, his right hand was cupping her cheek and the pad of his thumb caressed her soft cheek “Beautiful” his voice dipped to a husky whisper. She felt those familiar butterflies fluttering in her, but she had her heart broken enough times to know that it was better to clip their wings.
She stepped out of his hold “Mr. Sanchez, this is not professional” she whirled around and started towards the door.
“Don’t you feel it?” his words stopped her in her tracks, but she did not turn around.
She did not hesitate as she said, “I don’t!” yanking the door open she walked away without looking back.
Aiden kept his eyes on the door long after she disappeared. He knew in his heart that there was something between them, something fierce and something worth pursuing.
