Luke Bai curiously asked, “Nancy, I have a question I’m really curious about. How did you become the adopted daughter of the Gu family?”
In Pingcheng, Nancy Gu had a very bad reputation.
It seemed that everything people said about her was negative: she came from a poor background, grew up in the countryside, and besides being pretty, she was utterly worthless. With Xena Gu, an outstanding young lady from a prestigious family, as a comparison, she appeared even more incompetent.
Recently, she became the first mistress to be publicly criticized on social media for allegedly seducing her brother-in-law.
These incidents led uninformed people to think of her as a scheming girl.
What Luke Bai couldn’t understand was why Tim Gu would bring such a girl into their home?
If this girl truly had the cunning that rumors suggested and caused chaos in the Gu family, how could they possibly continue to tolerate her?
It clearly didn’t make sense.
So he wanted to hear another version from Nancy Gu herself.
Nancy replied calmly, “Maybe it’s because I share the same surname.”
Luke Bai thought: What kind of reason is that?
Nancy slightly boredly turned her face away and gazed at the scenery outside.
Mason Fu observed her for a moment; there was a fleeting glimmer in his phoenix-like eyes.
From what he knew, Tim Gu wasn’t someone who enjoyed doing charity work; it was even stranger that he suddenly decided to adopt a rural girl.
Moreover, Nancy showed no gratitude towards the Gu family; instead, there seemed to be more annoyance as if she desperately wanted to distance herself from them.
Such reactions were not typical of an adopted child; conversely, it seemed futile for the Gu family to keep her around.
There must be some hidden circumstances during this time. When they arrived at the dry cleaning store, Nancy got out of the car after opening the door. Mason and Luke Bai waited for her inside. As soon as Nancy reached the entrance of the store, a cute little boy happened to walk by. She suddenly stopped and glanced at him. After pausing for a few seconds, Nancy decisively followed him. “Hey! Where did that girl go?” Luke Bai pointed at Nancy who was leaving. Mason Fu focused on Nancy's departing figure: “Follow her.” * Nancy kept about three steps behind that little boy. They were approximately three hundred meters away from Lan Jing River; its waters were deep and connected to the sea.
It was evening now and high tide made Lan Jing River very dangerous at this time. “Hey!” Nancy quickened her pace to catch up with the little boy. “Where are your adults? Why are you out here alone?” The little boy shot her a cold glare when suddenly blocked by an older sister figure. His sharp gaze seemed to say: None of your business. Nancy wasn't one for patience either; she grabbed hold of his collar firmly. “It’s dangerous ahead; hurry back.” What kind of kid runs around like this all alone? Then again, she thought maybe this little guy snuck out without telling his family. She had just seen misfortune clinging around his face earlier. Since her current spiritual power was limited, she could only sense that he would encounter danger but wasn’t sure what exactly would happen. So when she saw him alone earlier, she decided to follow him.
The little guy became agitated when someone grabbed his collar; he angrily started swinging his tiny fists and kicking his legs too. Unfortunately for him though with those short arms and legs he couldn't even touch her clothes. Seeing that he couldn't win against her made him glare fiercely at her, but sadly his small appearance lacked any real intimidation.
