When they got back, there were two unfamiliar trucks parked near the house. Mitch looked at them, again without surprise, and nodded once. When they went in, they found Berne sitting at the kitchen table with a young Indian couple Mari had never seen before. There was also a white guy who was clearly not a local, although he wore the standard uniform of jeans, a T shirt, and a greasy baseball cap, with a dishwater blond ponytail hanging out the back. “I think Shadow’s about to foal,” Berne said. “Go take a look at her, Mari.” She glanced at the strangers as she walked through the room, but they paid her no attention. Mitch seemed to know them. He thumped the beer down on the table and growled “Help yourself” as he snapped a can free and pulled the tab. Neither Mitch nor Berne made a move
