The wall project was complete, and everyone seemed to relax. We all felt safe within the confines of that wall. We all sat down to discuss the next plans for their homestead community. They still needed a garden, chicken coop, and pens for cattle. We still had material available to complete these projects.
"Brian, I'm really grateful for all you and your families for help. I'm just not really sure where to go from here." Mary said first
Dad was writing things down in his notebook. "I'm writing up some plans for a chicken coop and the pens to hold your cattle. You already have the horse barn and horses." dad looked at the ladies."You need to get your hay inside the fence also. All the equipment is run on diesel, and George has diesel tanks for refueling. Which is great because it doesn't sour like gasoline does."
"Try to get all the cattle into Mary's pastures so they are close. Jaq will bring the wagon and some cages to help get all the chickens over here tomorrow." The men start getting to their feet."We need to start heading back."
Frank turned back to them."Keep guards out and be wary of everyone. We need to get these families settled. Good luck to you all."
.......
When we arrived home, we took the 2 families to their apartments. Then we showed Dean and Doc where the bunkhouse was. We knew they were exhausted, so we let them get comfortable with their surroundings.
We then went to the main house to debrief mom and the other ladies. The questions were coming from all sides. "How do you know they are Dr.s? Where did they come from? How many are here? How could you leave some with all those ladies? How do we know they are safe? Uncle Frank finally stopped them. "Wooohhh.....We checked their credentials, the Dr's carried diplomas and Certificates along with picture identification. We need Dr's in case someone is injured or gets sick."
"Tomorrow morning, we will take the Dr. to the infirmary and see what else he will need." Mom said." I would like to meet these people. There was news in the radio room, I think you and Frank need to head over and hear it."
"Bad?" dad asks, mom just looks at him. They rush out of the room. I feel extremely anxious waiting.
"Mom, what's going on?" I ask
"You will know soon enough. Head on up to your room and get cleaned up, and we will talk when they return." Mom replied, Clair followed me up to my room so we could talk privately
"Girl, did you get everything done. It sucks being stuck here all day without you." Clair said."Why is my mom so stuck on me not leaving the keep, but you get to ho out."
I get it. We had been couped up within the walls for months before I was allowed to leave. Granted, it was only to teach a few lessons, but it was so worth it. "I'm heading over tomorrow again. Maybe she will let you go with me because the wall is complete."
"That would be amazing, we turn 17 in 2 weeks. I heard our mom's talking about it. They are planning a dinner party for us." She exclaimed, we have been so excited about turning 17. It meant one more year, and we would be legal adults. Even though circumstances have changed.
"Clair, what does it matter anymore, we're still stuck in a situation that is impossible to get out of. We can't go off to college, we can't get jobs. ugh...I'm just not sure anymore." We sit and chat for a while, then head down to find out what's going on.
"The Nationalists are calling for a separation from the federal government. They are asking the states to secede into their own Nations with their own government bodies. This will shut off the money going towards the federalist cause." Uncle James states calmly. "Right now, they get funding from taxes paid in by the working classes. They have made the tax system so dependant on the working masses that if this money were to stop, they would have no other choices but to fund it out of their own pockets or give up."
"But don't the same politicians run the states also?" My Aunt Chloe asked
"Yes and no. Each state has representatives in Congress. The people have been calling for term limits for ages. However, most in office have become power hungry and will not vote it in. In states, we have the same concept at state level representations. We have a governor and cabinet members. The biggest issue now is whether we will stay a democratic republic or will the war change our form of government."
"I have heard that some of the wealthy are wanting a feudal monarchy put into place. But that will be determined based on how desperate people become." Aunt Jane said
"Precisely, the biggest issues will come into play when what type of power will be utilized at the end of the war. Will it be gold and silver, or land and resources." Frank said. "A person can have gold and silver, but that won't feed you. But land and resources can buy life and loyalty because a man and woman will do anything to feed themselves and their children."
"We are going to have to keep an eye on things. Right now, we are safe and fed, but the battles are coming our way. People are coming this way to get away from the war zones. We will need more hands when the planting season comes. Especially if we are planning on heading out to help at the front lines." Dad says, looking at all of us with affection. "Everyone head out and get some rest. we will be making plans in the coming days."
Clair and I head up to my room to get some rest. Tomorrow is another day.
