Prologue
Samika's POV You know they say, happiness comes in waves. And waves do have highs and lows. When Devon told me that I was ready to shift and he placed me on the ground, I was happy even though it was painful. I was happy that I am going to be one of them. An Alpha with a wolf! The tag of being the Wolfless Alpha would be removed once and forever. But just like the lows, things got bad pretty quickly. Brent, my brother, saw me shift from a human to a wolf. He always believed in werewolves and I remember how curious he was when we heard wolf howls back when we both were humans. One of us is not human anymore. What's even more shocking is that Brent and Devon actually got into a fight. A physical fight. They both have bruises on them. But Devon is a werewolf so he will get healed a lot quicker than Brent. Their reason for that fight is still unknown. They both are at hospital now, receiving proper treatment for their wounds. I am here in the pack house now. Along with Cass. She is not just my Gamma but my best friend I never asked for! Her mate, Tyler is with the kids, helping them sleep. And it's already evening. I don't remember when was the last time I ate or even had a sip of water. The doctor told me that my shift was different from those of the regular shifts and it has an effect since I am a late bloomer. She told me that I need to give my wolf a proper rest and shift again only after my wolf's consent. And that my wolf used a lot of energy for her first shift itself. There sure are many more surprises left, but I think I am still yet to be updated on it. "Do you need something to eat?" Cass asks me and I shake my head. "You never say no to food!" She tells herself as she gets up and walks to the kitchen already. "Funny how you already decided and yet asked me," I scream and she chuckles, still walking to the kitchen. If things went well, then Devon would have been here making me a sausage sizzle. That was what we agreed on today. But now he is in hospital tending to his wounds and I am stuck here with my own thoughts and f****d fate. Life never really gets easy. An anonymous letter clearly stated that my unknown enemy waged a war against me, and there is only one day left for it. I was busy gathering allies. One of them got caught in their own personal drama but that's a story for another day. "Would box-ed Mac and Cheese be okay?" Cass screams through the kitchen. "Don't ask me if you've decided already," I scream back walking to the kitchen to see her boil water already and reading the instructions behind the box on how to make it. I smile a little and I am now picking up on scents a lot better than earlier. Because now I have full fledged wolf abilities. The senses of smell, hearing and sight are absolutely insane though. Cass smells like honeydew somehow. I sit on the stool and watch Cass go and make food against the instructions mentioned in the box, and she claims that's the bullshit way. I am already afraid to taste it but the hunger is finally getting to me. Once done, she served it in two bowls and sat with me on another stool. "I hope this doesn't taste like vomit," I whisper, grabbing a spoonful of the mac and cheese. "How do you know what vomit tastes like?" She asks me, raising her eyebrows and I roll my eyes, shoving the spoonful of food inside my mouth. I hate to break it but it actually does taste good. "Well, you don't have to pretend like you don't love what you eat. But I know," Cass flips her hair and I smile a little more. "I know life is now being a tad bit unfair to you. But whose life is all roses and melodies anyway?" Cass questions me as she chews her food. A strange thing that she does, which she clearly knows pisses people off. And she does it only because she likes pissing people off. But she got a point with what she said. "Take baby steps. Deal with things one by one. Strive for things that mean something to you. Let the rest go to Hell and if they demand, reserve a one way ticket so they wouldn't cross your path again," Cass tells me again and I smile. "It's funny coming from you," I say and she looks at me, a little confused. "That you just talked all of that without chewing your food," she chuckles and we both fall silent, as we eat our food. I don't know what she is thinking about, but I am thinking about what she said. I have guests right now in my pack. I have my ally, and her army. I have my mate and brother in the hospital. I have my wolf who is sleeping right now and I don't know when she'll wake up. I don't know why both Devon and Brent fought. And I really do have a lot to sort out. I weighed my options. I indeed have a lot on my plate right now. Once I'm done with the food, which is a lot faster than Cass, I walk out. She is such a slow eater sometimes and when she is zoned out it's a whole different level. "Where to?" Cass screams at me and I turn around just a little before completely exiting. "To my mate. I need to start working on making things less complicated!" I tell her and she squeals, throwing her thumbs up in the air for me, making me laugh as I walk out. "Baby steps," I whisper to myself, totally determined to follow it.
