Chapter 7 : Rich S*x

1088 Words
Derrick had not been expecting to see his boss first thing in the morning when he reported for work. After he had been introduced to his client they had never seen each other, even after the decision during the preliminary hearing. If he wanted updates, he had nothing for him having spent most of his time scrolling the depths of the internet finding articles about his ex, something he was not proud of. He had slightly been keeping tabs on her over the past years, mostly on her accomplishments, but he had needed to verify what people said about her. Especially that morning after he had to sit through a radio host dragging her name through the mud, her reputation pretty much known. Like everyone else, he knew that it was all true, she did little to defend herself. Maybe that was why his boss wanted to see him. To inform him that they would publicly announce that he was defending Torez in court, especially since the actual case that would be closely followed would start in a months' time. “ Good morning Sir,’’ he started, already a bit on edge over his presence. It was not every day your superior came to find you himself. “ I told you not to call me Sir. Call me David,’’ the man replied while patting his back, which did nothing to ease his worries . His boss was a friendly man, always inviting him out and trying to bond despite his short stay at the firm. He reminded him so much of his father. “A force of habit,’’ he chuckled, still not comfortable with dropping the title with the older. “ Heard about what happened at the hearing. From the reports, we seem to be having an upper hand. I had expected the lady to be a bit of a challenge but you are an even match for her,’’ David said with pride in his voice. Derrick had not shared what had happened with him or anyone in the office, just his client, and that had been summarized to everything was okay, but he could not understand how that statement had been interpreted to what his boss was currently telling him. “ Sorry, I didn’t get to tell you myself,’’he apologized, hoping that was why the other had sought him out. “ It's fine. The judge told me immediately you left the courthouse. Keep up with the great job,’’ he finished before he left Derrick standing in his office. Something was off. Was that ethical? He wondered, deciding to find out about that later from his colleagues. At that moment, he had more pressing issues like finding out how he would get closer to Grace. A quick run in with a few colleagues during his lunch break answered his question. Most had been discussing what was going on with their cases, from asshole judges, to troublesome clients and the drama surrounding their day. In between the conversation he had skillfully slotted his question. " Everyone is speaking of asshole judges. What about the good ones? Don't you have judges who are your friends?'' he asked, feigning nonchalance about his question. " Well, for me, judge Collins is a friend,'' one lady responded. '" Things are easier if the judges are your friends, especially where there is no jury.Lucky for you, the judge in your case is a friend of David's,'' she finished with a hushed whisper. How did she know that? He couldn't help but wonder. " Don't be surprised, people talk. Even with Heather, most say the reason she has been winning is most judges want to f.uck her,'' and that caused him to choke. " I am a woman and I want to too.Sadly for them, she does not bat an eyelash towards them,'' she huffed before she continued eating while everyone on the table nodded. " She treats the rest of us like we have the plague. Outside of the court, case discussions are done in places that are strictly of her picking, she rarely interacts with us,'' another man pitched in frustration. " As if you are within her pay grade,'' the lady who had been speaking earlier responded mockingly, causing everyone to burst into laughter. He knew Heather, unlike the strangers around him. She had never been materialistic, but hearing all these things made him wonder how much had changed within the short time they had been apart. " Unless you are secretly a billionaire that we don't know, don't get your hopes up. She dates and sleeps around but only with a rich d.ick,'' and that statement caused another round of laughter to ring across the table. " Anyway, you should join us at Penal tonight. Most of us hang out there. Friends here are always a valuable asset especially when you need help to soften a judge,'' the lady who he had yet to get her name continued. Derrick nodded. He had been in the city for sometime but had not made a lot of progress in terms of friendships, as most of the friends he had been with had been left abroad. The only close people he knew from high school were not on speaking terms with him. As it had become his new habit, he went to the gossip column sites to confirm what he heard from the discussion that afternoon. Dawson the last conquest was a rich boy, and Markus, so was Dean, and the other names that he couldn't remember.Luckily her first boyfriend had been rumored to be someone else who was not him and it somehow stung. His fingers itched to edit the Wikipedia page but he stopped himself . Time couldn't move fast enough and it was evening and he was following the small crowd that was excitedly headed to the famed bar. He had hung at the back when they had arrived as people formed themselves into small groups before he recognized a face in the crowd. Her features matched what his private investigator had given him. He had shamelessly hired one to investigate a bit on Heather’s present personal life. When he had confirmed she was not married and not seeing anyone seriously, he had called off the tail on her. He slowly stalked towards where the lady was hunched over in a small group who were taking bets on who between him and his ex would be victorious in a month's time. She had just asked about him and that is when he took his chance.
