10 Frank stood by as Sarah drank in the beauty of the great mountain to the east. Partially shrouded in cloud, Ama Dablam was more than just a mountain to him. Its symbolic shape and name represented much of what he said his mother had stood for. At last Sarah stirred beside him. “It’s overwhelming,” she muttered. Frank gazed at the pinnacle, absorbing its splendor, then came to himself. “It’s called the ‘Mother’s Necklace.’” He raised his arm and pointed to it. “See those long ridges flanking her peak on either side? Those are her arms protecting her children, and the glacier there, hanging down the front of her is the Dablam.” “Dablam?” “A traditional pendant worn by Sherpa women that holds pictures of their gods,” Frank replied. Sarah was quiet a long time. “Do people climb it?”
