CHAPTER NINE AVA'S POV I had tried to get him out of mind-God knows I did- yet those hazel eyes seem to haunt me, no matter how much I tried to avoid it. The rage in them and the fact that I didn't fear when clearly I should, bothered me to an extent. Maybe he’d just been having a bad day like Josh had claimed. But why take it out on me like that? We had only met. He threatened me, literally. Not just plain ones but death threats. "And here we are," I snapped out of my thoughts, realizing the car had pulled to a stop. Stepping out, I was quite taken aback. A single compound, riddled with pretty great houses as far as the eyes could see, greeted my ears. "Where exactly are we? “I frowned; my eyes unable to tear away from the rather unusual sight. It was completely unheard of to see this kind of setting, especially in a town. I mean, if it were New York, I would had dismissed it as an array of apartments but even then, the number and arrangement of them would have had me raising an eyebrow in question. “It um…like a gated community sort of place,” he explained. “A community?” My eyes fell on a house a few blocks odd and seemingly at the center of this…community. It was larger than the rest, its white concrete walls and tall glass windows, a very much impressive sight for the building, “And who stays there?” “Um…our leader,” he scratched his head,” Anyway, how about we get you settled in? My parents are out of town but they will be coming in tomorrow to see us,” “So you don’t leave with them?” I questioned. That was much better if I was being honest. “What? No,” her chest vibrated with laughter,” I’m old enough to have a place of my own. Besides, if we are going to make it work, I would have wanted my own place,” The butterflies again. “Of course,” I smiled, turning so he wouldn’t see the heat spreading on my cheeks. Coincidentally enough, the five-bedroom house we walked into, was right next to the big mansion. The maid, lively, perhaps middle-aged woman, greeted us. Her name was Sandra and she was nothing short of perkiness, instantly getting along with Knox. As she led the boy to the kitchen, a much younger maid, Courtney, appeared to help me along with Josh. My room, just like, the rest of the house, was dripping with luxury. The Kings had to be very reach people if their son could easily live in such an expensive house when he hadn’t started working yet. The peach-colored walls and vinyl floor were exactly how I would have pictured my room to look like. It was spacious, much bigger than my room in Oakwood. I opened the window and much to my surprise, it was straight in line with the partly opened window from the luxurious mansion. Whoever lived there must be loaded with money. Wait, Josh called him or her, leader. What did he mean? Wait, was this like some sort of cult community? Had I been recruited to join or something? “So, I’m, going out for a bit. I need to talk with someone regarding your job application Speaking of which, you should probably get started on the application. Log in to the company website at www.claytonfunitures.com. I’ll be back in a few to give you a tour of the house and make sure everyone knows you are going to be living here for a good while. Trust me, Sandra is such a darling,” he smiled and damn! That had to be the most attractive thing I’d see today. “Sure. Go ahead,” I said, smiling warmly. He walked out, after flashing me one those dreamy smiles again. The excitement shooting through me was one that would surely keep me awake tonight. I took a quick bath, did the job application before walking downstairs. I was pretty tired if I was being honest.
