His presence behind me felt like the presence of something beautiful, intriguing, and perfect, and I knew I was too scared it we would be on the other side by now. I wanted so badly to be able to take his hand. To hold him tight. To tell him the things he wanted to hear. I wanted to watch him fall even deeper, knowing I was that strong, independent woman with whom his heart would be safe. "Thank you," I whispered, catching him a little by surprise. He looked up, his brows furrowed while his thumb came tiny circles around the tiny dots on the small of my waist. "For what, Angeline?" I shrugged. "This. Everything. In the blink of an eye, you changed my life." He chuckled, then leaned to kiss my shoulder. "I would do it a thousand times over, sweetheart." I sniffed a little. "I... " I trailed off, then swallowed again. "I need to tell you something." He looked up to me just as his phone started to ring. "Tell me," he said, ignoring the phone. I shook my head, laughing. "You should take it. Please." He did take it, and I couldn't hp but wwondr how this was yet another wasted opportunity.
