Rainy Nights

GRAY'S P.O.V. My parents died on a rainy night. I went to prison on a rainy night. Samantha left me at the altar on a rainy night. I found out about Kris on a rainy night. The skies had darkened, and I could not bring myself to leave. It was like a spell was holding me spellbound right here, and a part of me wondered if something else was going to happen tonight. What would I lose? What mistake would I make? Who will shatter my trust tonight? It was crazy how something that gave me sych peace almost always signified something bad happening to me. Something that felt like a part of me somehow ends up quite terribly. I heard the sound of feet against the concrete, water splattering and a bit lightly splashing against me. I slowly turned, my eyes going straight to the floor. My brows lightly furrowed. I know those shoes. They were the ones I had chosen for Angeline when I had run to the store for her this morning. With the pretty red dress. With the rose. And the note. I looked up slowly, my lips parting. Skin. Beautiful skin, then the red dress. Beautiful. Ethereal. My eyes finally looked up to meet hers, and she broke into a smile, her eyes crinkling on each side, her smile marks prominent. She moved a little closer and put the umbrella above me, shielding me from the rain, her eyes bright even when the world itself was so dim. She bit down on her lips slowly, then smiled again, her eyes pure, innocent. I am very curious regarding what good deed I must have done in my past life for the ultimate reward to be Evangeline. All of us have rules we would willingly break for someone, and even before I realized it, that was Angeline. I had married Angeline on a rainy night, too. I had taken the initiative to kiss her that night in my study on a rainy night, too. And now, here she was, standing just an inch away from me, ruining my expectations of some shitty thing happening to me today simply because it was raining. The rain had broken its own rule regarding me, and it had given me Angeline. She slowly stretched her hand to me, her head slowly tilting to the left. "Were you trying to get wet alone?" I gave a laugh. Before her, I had mostly forgotten how I sounded like when I laughed. How it felt when something was truly funny. I had forgotten humour and mirth. My life was just as black and white as my closet, and here she is, in bright red, standing in the midst of the colourlessness, and my eyes were suddenly much sharper. My eyes could suddenly see the green through grey. The rainbow in the sky. "I guess," I said, holding her hand. It was warm, soft, and distracting. "Why? Am I a rain cheater now?" She laughed. It was the perfect sound, like music to my ears. Like an instrumental deep in my soul. Slowly, she moved backwards, her fingers tightening around mine. I let her pull me till I was standing an inch away from her, her tiny figure resting somewhere around my chest, her hair falling in beautiful dark waves down her back. She took in a deep breath and slowly removed the umbrella from above her and let it fall to the ground. "Cheat on the rain with me." I laughed. Like she knew she was the only woman whom I would willingly cheat with. She was the only woman I would want after already having one. She was the one who could bring out the dissatisfaction inside of me. "Gladly," I said, pulling her to me for emphasis. She laughed, her hands wrapping around my waist, her head tilted up to me, her hair falling back behind her. She was the most beautiful woman ever. Like a dream that I could only imagine the moment she stood in front of me because I could never be creative enough to think of something quite as perfect as her. I wanted to take her heart and mend every piece, then keep it with me forever. I wanted it to rain forever as long as she danced with me under it. I wanted to plant her a field of roses and hold her hand as she walked through each and every one of them. I wanted to kiss her every time a rose bloomed on earth. I wanted to hold her hand till mine went cold. Till mine turned to stone. The dance was clumsy, slow, and we broke into laughter a few times just for the fun of it. We were both dripping went now, her dress clinging to her, her hair falling across my shoulder every time she twirled, every time she laughed hard. "Angeline," I said, suddenly pulling her towards me, my eyes holding hers. She stopped and immediately coloured, her chest heaving, her eyes meeting mine. "Y... yes?" I swallowed hard, my hand slowly moving from her hands to gently cup her cheeks, my kips parting. The words were stuck in my throat, and I didn't know exactly what to say to her. How to convey the colours she had brought into my life, how to tell her that I wanted to shop for rings with her, to renew our vows, to watch her say yes to me because she really, truly wanted me to love her for her. I leaned even closer, my eyes darting across both of hers. She had such pretty, expressive eyes, eyes that made me want to dive right into them and never come up shore. "Remember what I said about not falling in love with me?" Her eyes widened, but she bit down on her lips, her chest heaving. "Gray, I know how you feel about..." "I think I broke that rule, too, Angeline." Her lips parted, her eyes slowly misting up. My brows furrowed a little, my chest tightening on my heart. "I am sorry for being a hypocrite, Angeline, but... I want to renew these vows with you. I broke yet another rule, and I hope you will break it for me, too." "Gray," she whispered, leaning up to me, her hands slightly trembling around my cheek, her eyes deep and sincere, meeting mine. "Break it for me, Angeline." She nodded, laughing, tears running down her cheeks. The rain was nothing against the pearly beauty of her tears, and I ran my thumb under her eyes to get rid of them. "I already have," she whispered, her hands wrapping around my neck. "I already have, Gray." She wrapped her hands around me tight, and I held her back, my face buried in the beautiful scent in her neck, my breaths slow, my heart finding peace. And on a rainy night... Evangeline came to me like a blessing. On a rainy night, Evangeline broke a rule for me. On a rainy night, I fell in love all over again.
