Alpha Magnus.
I had just arrived at the Stormclaw Pack to pick up my yearly dues when the scent of blood and the sound of clashing fangs reached me.
It quickly became clear a fierce battle was unfolding between the pack’s warriors and a group of rogue wolves.
Preparing to join the fight with my men, my attention was pulled away by something unusual on the edge of the forest, a young woman slipping quietly into the woods.
She moved with a calm and deliberate grace that felt strange amid the chaos, and for reasons I couldn’t explain, I found myself drawn to her.
At first glance, I thought she might be an omega; her soft, rounded figure and modest clothing gave her an unassuming appearance, making her blend into the background as if she didn’t belong in this setting.
But there was something else—something curious that stirred my instincts.
Why wasn’t she hiding like the other omegas who would’ve sought refuge from the battle by now? Was she involved somehow? I decided to hold back and watch, to see what this mysterious woman was doing.
Then, to my astonishment, I saw her transform before my eyes into a striking white wolf—a creature I had only heard of in stories.
White wolves were legends, whispered to have rare powers and insight.
Mesmerized, I watched as she lifted her head and released a haunting howl, a sound that echoed through the trees, filled with sorrow and an almost supernatural element.
Every wolf in the clearing, warriors and rogues alike, froze as the howl echoed; even my Beta and the rest of my men were unable to move.
It was a mystery that I had not been affected by her charms.
My eyes were locked on her as she moved gracefully among the immobilized fighters, her sharp gaze assessing the scene.
This woman was no ordinary maid, and I realized I was witnessing something extraordinary.
She moved with precise purpose, silently disarming several rogues to shift the battle in her pack’s favor. Then, as quickly as she’d appeared, she melted back into the shadows of the forest, murmuring something softly before vanishing into the trees.
The battle resumed as if nothing unusual had happened, and with the rogues now disarmed, the pack warriors quickly gained the upper hand.
Sensing their defeat, the remaining rogues retreated, leaving the pack victorious.
The pack members cheered, exhilarated by the triumph, but my mind was entirely occupied by thoughts of the mysterious white wolf. Who was she, and why was she hiding her true self?
As the pack gathered to celebrate, I made my way to the center, where the Stormclaw Pack’s alpha, Cedric, greeted me with respect.
Being the alpha King of the entire kingdom, my position came with a commanded respect, which I was duly given anywhere I went.
Although, it was very unlike me to visit packs often, as I have men who did those errands for me. But after receiving the alpha invitation for his son's engagement, I decided to visit the pack myself.
Cedric was a formidable leader and welcomed me with a private dinner in my honor. During the meal, I couldn’t keep the curiosity off my mind.
“There’s someone here I’d like to know more about,” I mentioned, doing my best to sound casual.
Cedric raised an eyebrow, surprised by my interest. “Oh? And who might that be?” he asked.
I described the maiden I’d seen: a young woman with white hair and a compelling presence. The room fell silent as I spoke, and Cedric’s face shifted from curiosity to caution. Everyone seemed to know exactly whom I was describing, though none of them spoke her name.
Finally, Cedric cleared his throat.
“The woman you’re asking about… that would be Ariel. She’s a maid here, wolfless. She was placed in service as part of a punishment. I’m surprised you noticed her.”
“Wolfless?” I repeated, barely containing my disbelief. They had to be mistaken, or were they hiding something? I knew what I had seen: a powerful white wolf, not some helpless maid. Was this a ruse, or was there more to her story?
“I’d like to meet her,” I said firmly, leaving no room for argument.
Reluctantly, Cedric sent someone to fetch Ariel.
As I waited, my thoughts churned with questions about the strange circumstances surrounding her.
When she finally entered, she looked weary and cautious, her eyes lowered in a humble posture.
Yet, there was a quiet strength to her that I couldn’t ignore. As she approached, something stirred within me, my wolf instinctively recognized something I hadn’t expected.
This woman, this enigmatic maid, was my mate.
I took a step closer, feeling an unexplainable pull toward her.
Look at me, and she obeyed, slowly lifting her beautiful blue eyes to gaze at me. She was so beautiful, and despite the horrible condition she had found herself in, her skin was flawless.
I could barely keep my excited wolf in check, as he was eager to lay a claim on her.
“What’s your name?” I asked, my tone softening unexpectedly.
“Ariel,” she replied, barely whispering.
“I heard you’re wolfless, Ariel,” I said, though I already knew that couldn’t be true.
The power I’d witnessed in the battle was undeniable.
“So they say,” she replied, a trace of resignation in her voice.
My resolve hardened. “Prepare your things,” I commanded. “You’ll be leaving with me to my pack at dawn.”
A ripple of shock passed through the room. Ariel’s eyes widened with surprise, and I sensed her hesitation. But before she could respond, a cold voice broke in, dripping with resentment.
“Alpha Magnus,” a woman who had entered quietly said, her face twisted with bitterness. “Don’t you want to know why she’s being punished?” she quizzed.
I met her gaze coolly. “I don’t care. She is my mate, and she’s coming with me. That is final.” I stated.
The woman, who I guessed to be Ariel’s stepmother, glared at me, visibly seething at my dismissal.
Her hostility toward Ariel was unmistakable, and I felt an urge to protect her. I would not let anyone, especially this woman, stand in the way.
Another voice broke the silence. A young man, who I later got to know as Cedric's son, stepped forward, his expression conflicted.
“With all respect, Alpha Magnus, Ariel is my mate,” he claimed, though there was a hollow note in his voice as if even he didn’t believe his own words.
I turned to face him, unimpressed. “Yet she lives as a maid in your household while you prepare to marry her sister. Do you truly believe your claim?” I quizzed.
He looked away, embarrassed, unable to meet my stare. I glanced around the room, daring anyone else to object. “If there are no further questions, can someone ensure my mate is properly cared for?”
Silence filled the room, and I turned back to Ariel. Her face showed a mixture of surprise and relief, a hint of hope flickering in her eyes for the first time. I knew I couldn’t leave her to be oppressed any longer.
“Do you have any reason you do not wish to follow me?” I asked, staring deep into her eyes.
She slowly nods a “no” in answer.
“Go get your things,” I instructed.
She was about to walk away when I stopped her.
“On second thought Ariel, once you are done, my Beta, Henry will come to get you, you will be spending the night with me,”
She slowly nods her head before leaving the gathering.
As I watched her leave, I couldn't understand why she was so humble yet so powerful. Many with the type of power she possesses would have used the power to gather wealth and recognition.
Yet, she chooses to live as a maid. I was curious to know why.
Even though finding a mate and accepting one has never been what I looked forward to in my 27 years of existence, I was anxious to see how things went between Ariel and me.
