CHAPTER TWELVE Hands trembling, Madeleine hurried away from the altar, unable to speak. Her eyes stung, but no tears fell. Yet. She needed to make a quick escape and return to the palace where she could fall apart in private. She exited the cathedral. On the steps, the sun beat down on her—the hot temperature a jolt from the cooler air inside. A glance at the street showed three limousines with royal flags on the hoods. People passed by on the sidewalk, life going on as normal. Not hers. Everything seemed to have changed with one kiss.
