Chapter 2

489 Words

The following morning, Lord Takarada left his manor to visit Edo Castle and meet with the shogun. He rode ahead of his troops, retainers, and family. Although over fifty, age had not begun to show on the daimyo. Except for his gray hair, only the lines at the corners of his eyes belied his age. His face kept its youthful appearance. Hirata stood in formation with the samurai who were to remain behind, watching the entourage parade through the manor grounds and out the gate. Lady Takarada reclined in an ornate palanquin, curtains drawn back so she could wave to her subjects, supported by four large servants. Their daughters and grandchildren rode in another right behind hers. Takarada’s sons shadowed their father on horseback behind him. Legions of samurai, archers, and soldiers followed.
