Ava P.O.V.
What was that for?
I was now getting up at 5am to get my work done. I kept getting emails from all the people connected to Jake. Before anyone got to him beforehand he would contact me. I would set up appointments for him and handle any matters that did not require my boss's direct intervention. If they did, I would prepare all the information related to the matter beforehand, and he would decide if I should handle it and how, or he would take it upon himself.
There was a lot of it. In addition to purely official duties, I still took care of his life: laundry, stylist, personal trainer, housekeeper and other things he needed at the time.
Fortunately, the task concerning the erotic life of my boss was no longer given to me.
My contract was coming to an end and I wasn't sure if Jake was going to renew it. I was doing my job to the best of my ability but he still had his comments. Whether I was five minutes late for work, the coffee was too cold, or I made two spelling mistakes in my report so he couldn't concentrate while reading it. Sometimes I wanted to bite his head off, but at the same time I got wet in my pants when we argued or he gave me verbal reprimands.
My therapist urged me to take the plunge and give this relationship a chance. She said it was a good sign that I was finally attracted to a man, and that I wasn't afraid to be alone with him. Of course, I didn't tell her it was about my boss. I referred to him as an acquaintance I had recently met. She probably wouldn't have been so pleased with my progress in this matter, having learned that we had a business relationship.
The truth was that I felt that I was falling in love with him. I was a naive i***t with a crush on my boss. He was unearthly handsome, but also smart, intelligent, sarcastic, and good. At first glance, no one would think that this is a man with a big heart, but it soon turned out that behind the wall of indifference is a person who cares about others. He supported various non-governmental organizations supporting young people. He funded various school and college scholarships for talented but poor students, which was probably connected with the fact that he himself came from a poor and large family. By this time I had often met Kate, with whom I had developed a thread of friendship. We would sometimes meet for lunch or shopping, which was a refreshing change for me, since after the murder of my family I had closed myself off and was only close to Mark. Being friends with a woman was very different than being friends with a man, but I couldn't tell her about my feelings for her brother either.
I felt that I was changing. I still had to check every corner after coming back from the apartment, but I was no longer afraid to let new people in. Working and dealing with a grumpy Jake every day gave me a lot of self-satisfaction in addition to fatigue, which made me happier and more confident.
When my last week of work began Jake called me into his office. I knew it would be soon, but I still felt nervous walking into his office. I knocked as I waited for the invitation, then walked in and Jake in his immaculate grey Hugo Boss suit pointed to the sofa by the window. I sat down and after a moment he sat across from me with his usual cold, steely gaze.
- Ava, as you can probably guess I wanted to discuss your expiring contract. As you know, there are some shortcomings on your part. You need to focus more on the details. I don't like sloppiness. Also, if you want to stay in this position you need to stop being late.
- I'm not late," I replied and he looked at his paper.
- Today you were 5 minutes late - he said and I started to get nervous wondering if he had written there all my tardinesses from the last 3 months and other mistakes - You understand that such tardinesses are not only bad for you but also for me as you are now my right hand man. You should set an example for other employees.
- I understand," I muttered, not knowing what to say. I liked this job after all and I did not want to lose it, and his attacks on me were absurd. There was no point in arguing, especially since he seemed prepared to tell me all my mistakes.
- Nevertheless, you lasted with me for 3 months as the first assistant this year...
- Khmm... And the previous one," I added, to which he only gave me a glare.
- And I am willing to give you another chance. Please keep working so hard and work on what I said.
- Thank you," I said too loudly, overcome with emotion.
- That's not all," he said and handed me some papers. I glanced at them and began to blush intensely, "Please be careful what you send from our domain. I would also suggest that these emails stop. Our IT department brought them to my attention as they were directed to our competitor's domain. If I didn't know you were friends with Ralph Miller we could accuse you of corporate espionage.
- Sorry, I'm not spying...
- You're just venting your frustration at a horrible boss? - He asked raising his eyebrows - Ava, you yourself asked me to treat you like a professional assistant to the president. I don't think I deserve it... - he looked at the cards - saying "Asshole boss", "Impossible arrogant" or "Heartless chairman". You are highly compensated for your work and have other benefits.
- I'm sorry, it won't happen again...
- Of course not," he looked at his watch and stood up, "It's almost 9, so I'm waiting for my morning coffee. Please make sure it's warm this time.
I said thank you to the glass and left his office feeling like he was staring at my ass.
