Chapter 3

1728 Words
Ava P.O.V. I stood at the bar drinking vodka on the rocks ignoring the guy who had been trying unsuccessfully to pick me up for 5 minutes. Ralph had disappeared somewhere. I waited here for him for a good 10 minutes, but he still didn't come back from the bathroom. Hearing what a terrible day I was having, he invited me here to the club, promising free drinks, dancing and a great time. So far, all I had gotten were free drinks. I felt a slight buzz in my head. The talkative guy still didn't catch the hint that I wasn't interested. At one point he grabbed my arm and I reflexively grabbed his arm twisting it and slamming his face against the bar top until he hissed in pain. People around me started staring and whispering something to each other. - Touch me again and next time I'll break your arm," I yelled. - Calm down, calm down - I heard Ralph's voice behind me and I let go of the would-be amateur, who ran away in jumps. I looked angrily at my friend. - Ralph where did you disappear? I'm waiting here until this i***t came and started to hit on me - I hissed with resentment. - Hey! It's not my fault you're beautiful - he bared his teeth in a wide smile winking at me - I met a friend from college. They have a VIP room upstairs. They are inviting me to their place. - I don't know if it's a good idea - I replied reluctantly - I'm in a f****d up mood. I'm not the life of the party. I was hoping for dancing, drinks and chatting, but only with you. - We've already had the drinks, and there's still time for dancing and chatting. They're billionaires. It's worth getting to know them. You might need it someday. - Yeah? Billionaires? I already know one, that's enough - I answered laughing. - I am different, Princess - he answered, grabbing my hand and leading me upstairs. We entered a large room with tinted glass. The first thing I noticed were four girls with faces so changed by the surgeons that they looked like barbie dolls differing only in length and color of hair. They were sitting on the laps of some guys in suits. One stood up what was without a girlfriend and held out his hand to Ralph. Only now did I notice that it was none other than the HR director of today's company, the divine blond Mark Smith. I looked around nervously and only now did I recognize my future asshole of a boss staring at me from behind the busty blonde. I had the urge to run away but it was too late as Ralph started introducing me with his friends, saying about himself that he had been a friend of theirs during college but unfortunately their paths had diverged when they started a company together. I picked up their meaningful looks between each other at those words. - Sit down Ralph. We already know each other, don't we? - said Mark smiling that wonderful smile of his. I nodded and my friend looked at me surprised. -That's where I went for my interview today. - What, the one where the guy got a b*****b from the assistant? He asked shocked, to which Jake replied with a laugh. - That one. What are you guys drinking? We sat down and the old friends started telling their college stories while laughing and still drinking like it wasn't Monday today. I guessed that was probably one of the perks of working for their own company, or their father's company like Ralph. I sat quietly drinking my vodka on the rocks from time to time looking at how sleazy and shameless these guys were. They kept macing the girls sitting on their laps like they were dolls instead of living women. I felt nauseous at the sight. I was pulled out of my musings by Ralph's voice: - Hey Ava! So what do you think? Are you going to get the job? I looked around at the men sitting there who might be my bosses in the future and, driven by alcohol, I answered defiantly, looking Jake in the eye. - Sure. Otherwise they're going to get sued. Everyone started laughing, except Jake. Andrew raised his glass to the top. - You got some nerve, girl. Bravo. You're accepted. I continued to stare into the cold gray eyes unable to look away. I had a feeling that the moment I said my words something flashed in them. - We'll see about that - said Jake getting up at the same time gently sliding the blonde from his lap to the place next to him - We still have to discuss a few things. Come on. He walked to the door and looked at me defiantly just as I had looked at him a moment ago. I couldn't chicken out, so I got up and followed him. I thought we would go to some secluded quiet room next door but he led me to the dance floor. We started swaying to the rhythm of the music, keeping some distance from each other. - I'm not going to sleep with you - I said, at which he pointed to his ear that he didn't hear. I screamed again louder - I will not sleep with you! He came so close that our bodies were separated by millimeters, and I felt his mad musky masculine smell and the heat radiating from his body. - Repeat - he commanded and I smelled the additional scent of whiskey and tobacco, but surprisingly this only added spice to his scent. I felt heat spreading through my body, and suddenly my words seemed insincere. I stood on my toes, putting my hand on his shoulder and coming close to his ear, totally inappropriate and too close. - I won't sleep with you - I repeated gently rubbing his earlobe with my lips. He leaned back just enough to look into my eyes. - I won't sleep with you either - he said and I involuntarily moved my gaze to his shapely lips. I bit my lips nervously, trying to control my desire. I turned and walked off the dance floor and he followed me. I stood in a hallway where the music wasn't as loud and the lights were dim. -What do you want then? - I asked looking into his eyes. He approached me with an energetic step in which there was something wild. Standing in front of me, he leaned down and put his hands on either side of my head. - Are you together? - Here? - I asked, trying to look into his eyes instead of his mouth. He grinned in an incredibly sexy throaty way. - No. Generally. Are you guys dating as a couple? - No. We're just friends. - That's good. I don't like the guy - he leaned closer trying to kiss me, but I did a quick dodge and got away from him. I stood behind him and looked at the entrance to the hallway. I was sure someone was standing there, but suddenly they disappeared. I turned back to Jake. - Did you see anyone there? - Where? - He asked straightening up and looking at the place I was pointing - No. - Okey. I must have seen something. Let's go back. In the Vip room we found only Ralph and Mark. I walked over to my friend and said that I would like to go home. He just nodded, then we said a stern goodbye to the men and left. He ordered a cab and got in with me trying to convince me to spend the night at his place, but I didn't feel like talking at night anymore. He finally stopped trying and changed the subject to something just as touchy for me at that moment. - Is it a good idea for you to work for them? They're playboys. You should work for me. You'd be safe, I'd give you the position you want and a great salary. - That's why I don't want it. I don't want a job with connections. - How is that any different from the blackmail you made? - Everything. I'm gonna have to prove myself anyway, and if it doesn't work out, I'll be fired after my probationary period. With you, whether I did good work or bad work, you'd still hire me. That wouldn't be good. - With him you can work on your knees - he threw up quickly and I looked at him angrily. He shrugged his shoulders - You saw for yourself what he does with his assistants. - f**k you. Nothing like that will happen. You know me - I growled hitting him in the arm. - Ouch... Right... Just out of curiosity, what did you do after leaving the VIP room? - He looked at me carefully and the cab stopped in front of my apartment building. I smiled sticking my tongue out and got out of the cab. Before I closed the door I shouted to Ralph. - He was checking up on me to see if I would be willing to take this job on my knees. I laughed and slammed the door and ran to my entrance.  At home I threw myself on my bed. I closed my eyes remembering the whole day and the beautiful cold gray eyes. In a way, I told Ralph right. Jake was checking me out, and I wasn't going to give him anything. What I left out, however, was that I still felt a lust for him like I had never felt before in my life. It was a foreign and strange feeling to me. After what happened to my sister I was afraid of men and avoided them. With Jake it was different. I felt like touching him and getting to know him better. I began to think about the would-be kiss. Would he taste whiskey with tobacco? I bit my lip and rolled onto the edge of the bed, opening the drawer of my nightstand and taking out my friend who had gotten me through all my years without men.
