Chapter 2 The Cheating Husband

1353 Words
Scarlett looked up, stumbling backward unsteadily. Wesley extended his arm, wrapping it around her waist and pulling her into his embrace. He noticed the exhaustion in her eyes and said softly, "Let me take you back to your place." The faint scent of cedarwood from his body surrounded Scarlett, and it made her heart inexplicably race. While she was lost in thought, Wesley had already opened the car door for her in a gentlemanly manner. When Wesley noticed the dress she was wearing had an orchid pattern, his eyes softened. A wave of long-buried memories suddenly flooded his mind. She had been only eight years old back then, surrounded by a group of boys much older than her. They called her a child without a mother, claiming she was born but not raised properly. Some of the boys even cruelly threatened to urinate in her mouth. Just when she thought she couldn't escape such a disgusting humiliation, he intervened without any hesitation, stopping the boys who were trying to humiliate her. "Let her go!" With impressive skill, he subdued the boys, making them kneel and beg for mercy, promising never to bother her again. Before they parted, to show her gratitude, she gave him the orchid brooch she had worn on her clothes since childhood. Years later, when she had grown up, she saved him when he was severely injured. Their time together had left an indelible impression on him. But before they separated again, knowing he was being hunted by mercenaries worldwide, he didn't want to involve her. So, he tricked her into drinking a potion that made her forget about him. When they reached Scarlett's apartment complex, she thanked him and turned to open the car door. Just as she was about to leave, she caught a glimpse of the orchid brooch on his clothes, making her wonder. 'Could it be him?' But she didn't linger and walked into the complex. ***** The next day, Scarlett returned home from the hospital she owned. As soon as she stepped out, she saw a pale-faced Brenda, who put on a sincere expression. "Scarlett, you once helped me, and I've always seen you as an older sister! I really didn't mean to ruin your marriage. Please forgive me?" Just as Scarlett was about to say something, people around them started chiming in. "She's being so humble, yet Scarlett still won't forgive her!" "Besides, her husband doesn't love her anymore!" "What's the point of dragging this out?" "Why not just let it go?" Scarlett knew well that no one in this world wished her well. She coldly glanced at these people. "If it were your husband's cheating, would you want to live peacefully with the mistress?" Out of the corner of her eye, Brenda saw Patrick approaching. She immediately fell to her knees in front of Scarlett, pretending to be pitiful. "Scarlett, I'm begging you. Please let us be together!" If Patrick's look could kill, Scarlett wouldn't know how many times she would have died by now! He rushed to Scarlett and was about to clamp his fingers around her neck. Scarlett never imagined that Patrick would immediately side with Brenda and treat her so harshly without even considering the truth. Once, she had been the person Patrick cherished the most, but now, his eyes were filled only with Brenda. Bitterness surged in her throat... Just as Patrick was about to choke her, a familiar figure stepped in to shield her. Wesley grabbed Patrick's throat, his tone cold. "Even if you died a thousand times, it wouldn't be enough to repay what she's done for you!" He tightened his grip. Brenda, with tears in her eyes, cried out. "Mr. Kingsley, please spare Patrick! I'll do anything you ask!" Wesley looked at Scarlett, his voice deeper than before, "Have you decided?" Scarlett knew exactly what Wesley meant. She wanted to see just how much Brenda loved Patrick, enough for him to treat her this way. "You can save Patrick. Just start barking like a dog, and keep going until I'm satisfied!" Patrick's eyes filled with murderous intent when he heard this. "Scarlett, are you courting death?" Scarlett suppressed the bitterness in her heart and deliberately provoked him. "Patrick, take a good look. It's not me courting death. It's you. Paying with your life for angering me might just be right!" At this moment, Brenda's dog-like barks pulled Scarlett's attention back. Brenda kept barking until she lost her voice. Scarlett finally reluctantly smiled. "You two really are a perfect match!" She walked up to Wesley. "Let Patrick go. I'll make sure he regrets this for the rest of his life!" Wesley was gloomy, but he still released Patrick. "Offending Scarlett will cost you more than you can afford." Scarlett's gaze grew complicated. She never expected that the warmth she felt would come from Wesley, Patrick's arch-rival. She and Wesley walked to a quieter area. Her clear eyes revealed a captivating allure as she brushed aside some wind-tousled strands of hair. "Even if I divorce Patrick right away, is it really worth it for you to stand up for me like this?" Wesley fell into silence for a while, his voice firm and unquestionable. "Of course, we're partners. I never misjudge people!" Scarlett knew his words were more about future benefits, but she always repaid kindness and remembered her grievances. "No matter the reason, thank you for helping me out." She turned to leave after speaking. She had only taken a few steps when Wesley's voice reached her again, his tone distant but with an underlying concern. "It's late. It's not safe for you to go home alone!" Scarlett felt tears welling up in her eyes as she tried to keep her voice steady. "You care about me more than my husband does!" Despite her effort to suppress her sadness, Wesley could sense the bitterness in her voice. A barely noticeable softness flickered in his usually cold eyes, and he gently smoothed the wrinkles on her collar. "You deserve someone better to protect you." Without showing any emotion, Wesley opened the car door for Scarlett in a gentlemanly manner, signaling her to get in. 'Why did he say that?' She hesitated briefly before getting in the car. The next day, Scarlett didn't go to the hospital. She was supposed to go with Patrick to finalize their divorce, but Patrick canceled, claiming Brenda wasn't feeling well. So, she made plans with her friend Cynthia Edwards to go shopping. Every woman liked shopping, and Scarlett was no exception. Scarlett had just picked out a nice dress when Cynthia's angry voice interrupted her. "Scarlett, Patrick is such a jerk! You haven't even finalized the divorce, and he's already kissing Brenda publicly!" She was about to storm over. Scarlett wanted to stop Cynthia. She reached out but then reconsidered and didn't intervene. She walked over together with Cynthia. Scarlett initially didn't want to have any dealings with Patrick and Brenda anymore. But when she remembered how Patrick used Brenda's health as an excuse to delay the divorce while shopping with her now, she felt a surge of anger at being deceived. When they reached the store, Cynthia's voice immediately made Brenda and Patrick the center of attention. "Everyone, come see how this b***h seduces men! Are we about to see them making love right here in the mall?" Scarlett turned to Patrick to see his reaction. Brenda pushed Patrick away as soon as she heard Cynthia's words. "Patrick, don't blame Scarlett. Her friend is just standing up for her!" Then, she covered her chest, her face pale. Seeing Brenda's pained expression, Patrick strode towards Scarlett. His face darkened as he raised his hand to slap her. Scarlett's throat tightened, and she realized it was too late to retaliate. Just as she was about to be slapped, Wesley appeared, pulling her into his arms and kicking Patrick in the stomach. Although Patrick tried to dodge, Wesley was faster. With a loud bang, Patrick was sent flying into a mall pillar three yards away, accompanied by a piercing scream. Then they heard Brenda's wailing.
