So much for a worry-free, uneventful December. * * * * Saturday, December 22, 2021 I fiddled with my tie and adjusted my cuffs for the tenth time in five minutes. To say I was nervous was ludicrous since I was way past that. I knew I was overdressed in my best suit, shirt, and tie, but this was Hamish, and, despite it all, I wanted him to see me as successful and confident, far removed from the grumpy, terse, reticent twenty-year-old he had known in college. Okay, I was still a little grumpy and terse, according to the people I worked with. My aunt thought it was cute and just patted my cheeks like I was a five-year-old. Uncle Ray just sighed. My black hair had been ruthlessly brushed back and tucked behind my ears, but a few curly strands escaped anyway, like the traitors they were.
