Chapter 3 The Proposal
Meagan stepped into her office and picked Hazel’s call on the second ring. “Meagan, how dare you treat me this way?! I have been nothing but good to you over the years! So why do you tend to forget me and even worst you toss me aside like a piece of trash!” Hazel screamed over the phone almost deafening Meagan’s ear drum.
“Hazel-“
“What do you have to say this time?!” Meagan put the phone away from her ear as she settled in the swivel chair in the office. She clicked on the screen to turn on the speaker.
Her best friend has been a drama queen since they were little girls. “What excuse do you want to give to me this time around?!” Hazel asked with annoyance still clear in her tone.
“I am sorry...Hazel. I got -“
Hazel interrupted her. “...busy with work and I didn’t have all the time to access my phone.” Hazel completed Meagan’s intended statement.
Hazel completed Megan’s intended statement. “It is always the same words over and over again.” She added.
“Hazel, you have every right to be pissed at me for not texting or checking on you. I am really sorry.” Meagan apologized.
Hazel heaved a sigh. “And don’t even dare promise to make things up to me this time.” She sounded angry.
“I love you, Hazel.” Meagan said.
Seconds clicked by in silence followed by a giggling sound from the other end.
“Gotcha!” Hazel said.
She has done it again. The drama queen has just put up another show of feigned annoyance making it look like she was really mad at Meagan.
“Oh..Hazel...” Meagan heaved a sigh of relief. “Is my head safe now?” She asked.
“Of course! It’s good to know that my threats always work on my best friend. You poor little thing.” Hazel giggled.
“You scared me Hazel, you almost blocked my eardrums with your first few words.” Meagan couldn’t help but laugh.
“Ouch...sorry best friend. So how are you doing?” Hazel asked.
“I am doing fine. What about you?” Meagan asked as she toyed with the ball point pen on her table.
“I am super duper excited!” Hazel replied with excitement in her tone.
“Something good must have happened to your wolf, Hazel. So fill me in.” Meagan said.
“Guess what?” Hazel said in a low tone now.
Meagan had to roll her eyes. “Come on Hazel, you know how bad I am in guessing game.”
“Yeah you are terrible at guessing but you still need to give it a try this time. Let me help you a bit...so what’s my greatest dream as a werewolf?” Hazel demanded.
Meagan didn’t have to think too much. “Finding your mate and getting married to him.” She answered.
“You never disappoint in things that concerns me!” Hazel exclaimed happily.
“Wait..you have good news to share with me and -“ Meagan paused trying to think and soon realization hit her. “Oh my God...” she stopped.
“Go on girl....” Hazel cheered.
“Julius asked you to marry him?!” Meagan gasped out.
“Yes!” Hazel’s response was sharp and immediate.
Meagan stood up from the chair abruptly and they both screamed out at the same time. Meagan totally forgot that she was still at her work place.
“Julius proposed to me two days ago! I tried to reach out to share the good news to you first but you went..MIA.” Hazel said, tears pulling in her eyes.
“I am so happy for you, Hazel. Finally you can work down the aisle with the man you love.” Meagan said with a happy smile on her face.
“I didn’t know I would end up with a Beta of a powerful pack.” Hazel laughed.
“You have always wanted your mate to be someone powerful.” Meagan reminded her.
“An alpha is the most powerful in our world.” Hazel corrected.
“Yeah I know the ranks all thanks to you. But I am very sure you got the best man in your pack.” Meagan laughed.
“Well wait until you meet the alpha of Moon Stone pack.” Hazel said in a tight whisper.
“I can hear you, my love.” A baritone voice said over the phone. It was Julius, Hazel’s husband to be.
Julius is the Beta of the most powerful werewolf pack in America. He is the second in command in Moon Stone pack.
“Come on, I was only kidding. I owe my loyalty to the alpha but I love you more.” Hazel giggled.
“Hi Meagan,” Julius said over the phone.
“Hello Julius, good to hear from you
She wasn’t that familiar with Julius unlike the other men Hazel had dated in the past. She has only met Julius once and that was when he visited the state with Hazel just to bring a gift to Meagan on her birthday. And that was two years ago.
Meagan haven’t seen her best friend for over a year now. They only keep in touch on phone. Meagan is always the busy one although Hazel also has a role to fulfill at the pack’s infirmary as a physician.
“Wedding bells!” Hazel laughed.
“You already fixed a date?” Meagan asked.
“Yes our wedding is in two weeks.” Julius replied.
“Wow! I wasn’t expecting it to be this soon.” Meagan admitted.
“I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with you baby.” Hazel kissed her mate.
“We are just trying to cut down expenses. The moon celebration is coming up so it is wise to have the wedding the same week.” Julius explained.
“Oh that’s understandable. I mean expenses will be on the pack.” Meagan replied.
“We are the lucky couples. The alpha is offering to sponsor our wedding because he wants to make his Beta happy.” Hazel added excitedly.
“That’s not the case. It is a tradition in our pack for high ranking officials.” Julius countered.
“Then I guess I am the luckiest bride.” Hazel said and they all laughed.
“Congratulations to you again, best friend.” Meagan sat back on the swivel chair moving it slowly in a circular motion.
“Pack up your bags because you have to come to our pack and perform your duties as the chief’s bridesmaid.” Hazel announced.
“What?! You want me to be your chief bridesmaid?!” Meagan asked in a surprised tone.
Hazel was confused. “Why do you sound so surprised?” She asked.
“I am just wondering why you pick me to be your chief’s bridesmaid? I mean we -“
Hazel cut her off. “You are my best friend Meagan! Look I understand that you are busy but I don’t have anyone to fill in that spot for me.”
No words came from Meagan. She thought Hazel would have fixed in someone better from the pack. She had been the one making all sorts of excuses over the year each time Hazel tried to set up a meeting. She had declined every ladies hangouts and missed get together organized by those she recognized as friends.
Ever since the fall apart in her first relationship, Meagan had shut herself out from the world. All she did was bury herself in work.
Meagan is the type of the person who hates making mistakes but she made one three years ago. Every part of her regretted it. Her inexperience had caused her great damage. It had broke and destroyed every part of her existence. And Meagan had vowed to never make such a mistake again. And to achieve it she had stayed away from having another relationship or getting involved and close with a man.
“You won’t turn me down right?” Hazel said in a tight whisper. She was scared of her best friend’s rejection.
“You can’t miss my wedding, Meagan.” Hazel mumbled.
“I am sorry..Hazel for-“
Hazel interrupted her best friend. “No Meagan listen..I understand that you have been through a lot these past few years. And I hope that some day you come out of that shell of loneliness. But I need you to be here with me. I can’t do this without you, Meagan.” Hazel’s voice pleaded almost at the verge of tears.
“I guess you are lucky after all. I filed in a for a two weeks leave at work just to go for my yearly vacation. So I will make it to your wedding.” Meagan said after some minutes of silence.
Hazel couldn’t believe that Meagan just said yes. “She won’t miss my wedding!” Hazel cried out.
Meagan and Julius laughed. “Stop being such a cry baby.” Meagan said.
“My chief’s bridesmaid! You scared me Meagan, I thought you were going to turn me down.” Hazel wiped her tears.
“What if I had turned you down?” Meagan asked.
“Well with my mate’s influence, I can have ten big wolves travel down to your state to abduct you to our pack. And you will never leave this place again.” Hazel said in a serious tone.
“Seriously? You will have me abducted!” Meagan laughed.
“Thank goodness you said yes!” Hazel screamed in excitement.
“I can never miss your wedding.” Meagan said.
“Thank you, Meagan.” Hazel blew kisses over the phone.
“Anything for you.” The timer on her table beeped.
“Your break is over right?” Hazel asked.
Meagan hummed a positive response as she stood up and grabbed the medical jacket. “Alright. Make sure you give me a call to fill me in about the preparations.” She added.
“Okay, I’ll send a chart to you and beep you later at night.” Hazel replied.
“Bye.” Meagan disconnected the call.
