DECLAN
We were both sitting in the dark, not knowing what to pray for. Or what to expect. Landon could leave us here forever. Of course, vampires couldn't d*e even if we didn't take blood, but then, we would become so weak that it would be better if someone chopped our heads off.
“When did you get your first f*ck?" Ashley asked, her voice low and weak as mine.
“Well, I was seventeen and I thought I had done something so special."
“Seventeen? I was thirteen!”
Ashley began to tell the whole story.
Who could blame me, we have been locked in an absolutely dark room with no light whatsoever for God-knows-how-long. Talking was something we could still do, it would be much sadder when we couldn't do it anymore.
According to Ashley, she had s*x with someone who was ninety-five. Yes, she was thirteen. Well, vampires weren't like humans and they didn't really see age as anything at all. Most didn't even know their own. Why bother count when you couldn't d*e naturally?
Ashley had always been naughty and she claimed she had asked him for s*x and he agreed.
“It was superb, from that day I never got tired of having it.”
My case was a little different. It was with a girl who was nineteen and I was two years younger. The girl and I weren't friends or anything, in fact, I had never thought about having s*x with anyone. Then I was totally fine j*********f.
Being that vampires had always lived together, I had her known since I was little.
She came to my room one day and put her hands into my underpants. Well, the rest was, you know, as expected. It was really fun though I was sure what I was doing. Honestly, it wasn't really hard, I think I figured it out quite fast.
“Do you know why I told you that you couldn't let me die?” Ashley let out, her voice a little more serious now. “When Landon was about to k*ll me, I told you that you couldn't allow me die, remember?”
“Yeah, I remember.”
“Why did I say that?”
“Cause you didn't want to d*e, what other reason could there be?”
Ashley drew closer to me. “That wasn't the only reason, I had something else in mind. And that something is that we have to end our kind, I have said this to you countlessly.”
I cleared my throat. “Ashley, every time you say this, I tell you that you're crazy, that's exactly what I will tell you now.”
“I'm not crazy, I'm realistic.”
Ashley believed that vampires shouldn't exist, that we reduced the quality of life. But of course, she didn't want to d*e, she only wanted to k*ll every vampire beside me. And of course, herself.
What she said made a lot of sense, but then, with most of the world's population perished, was it smart to k*ll what was left? Vampires or not.
“This is our life mission, Declan. Especially with what Landon had made you do, you have to do something to make sure that those innocent lives weren't in vain.”
“And killing every vampire is the way?” I asked.
“Yes, it is.”
“What about the demons, they're way stronger than any being and are just as cruel, how do we end them too?”
Ashley let out a sigh. “I don't know, but what I do know is that we better do what we can.” She smacked her hands on the ground. “First and foremost, we have to get out of here.”
As if the universe wanted us to find a way out. I heard Rochu as he came behind the huge iron door. Rochu was only thirteen years old, he was one of the brightest young vampires in the camp.
“Declan, how are you? I just want to say I love you and Ashley, I'm sorry you both have to face this.” He said, his voice clearly showing how scared he was.
If he was found talking to us, he would be given a thorough beating. . .if he was lucky.
“Rochu, I know, just be good, we love you too,” I said.
“I wish there was something I could do to help.” Rochu voiced, emotions undoubtedly bubbling in him.
“Well, there is something you can do, you can break the door and save us if indeed you love us,” Ashley said.
Indeed he could. If not that we were injected with vervain, we would have broken the door. Metal wasn't strong enough to hold a vampire.
Rochu began to sob. “No, you know I can't do that, you can imagine what they will do to me.”
“Well, we could all run away, we would be way happier anyway.”
“Your uncle is the only family you have left and he doesn't give a rat as$ about you," Ashely added.
“Vampires stick together, vampires live together, vampires breed together," Rochu said, reciting the vampire's mantra. Vampires are told this when they are very young.
The most ridiculous sh*t ever!
“Rochu, I love you but you know those words mean nothing because Landon and over ninety-nine per cent of the vampires don't care about those words. Therefore, it's just words.” Ashley explained.
“But we can't force you to do anything, do what you think is right,” I added.
Ashley wanted to say more but I squeezed her hands, making her know that we should let him decide for himself. This wasn't an easy decision to make, it meant a lot of things for him.
Just as scary as the fear of what would be done to him if he was caught, was the fear of just abandoning his life behind. Did I think we would all be happier away from Landon? Yes, the farther the better. But then, leaving wasn't easy especially in this crazy world. Not to mention the fact that Landon wouldn't rest till we were found.
“Do you think he would help?” Ashley asked, whispering.
Also whispering, I replied, “Would you?”
“I don't know."
We waited, hoping that Rochu would turn back on his life and help us.
ROCHU
Standing outside the big iron door, I didn't know what to do. Should I help them knowing what it could mean to me?
I didn't know what to do but one thing I had learnt in the little time I have lived, was that if I was torn between two things or if I had to do something or not do it, was to visualise my life with or without that thing. In this case, if I didn't have Declan and Ashley in my life, I would be alone. Life itself would have no meaning.
They were family, they were my true family. Not my uncle who wouldn't care if I d*ed, not the loads of mean vamps I see around me.
They were my family.
With that in mind, I had no regrets as I flung my foot at the door, giving the iron door the best I could.
They were all I had. It was better to die trying to save them, than living without them.
DECLAN
The door gave way after the third kick. Rochu ran in and brought us to our feet. Anything could happen now.
“Thank you, Rochu,” I said, digging my hands into his bushy hair and then hugging him.
“We don't have time for this, let's find a way to leave this building without getting caught.” Ashley asserted, her brain thinking about ways to leave the building.
“Now isn't this funny," Arcedius said, as he walked in with two syringes filled with vervain. “I'm guessing Rochu here, helped break this door, well, he's always been slow.”
“I would say you are dumber than you realise, but then, how would you realise when you are so dumb? Go on, call for help.” Ashley said, trying to get Arcedius angry.
Arcedius was the easiest person to annoy, he couldn't help himself.
“Help? I curse the day I will need help to beat the crap out of losers like you all." He said, charging at us.
He dropped the syringes as he was set to beat the crap out of us. He flung Ashley and me on the wall. Before he could do any more damage, Rochu stabbed him with the two syringes filled with vervain syrup.
The syrup had an immediate effect on Arcedius. He fell to the ground. When he tried to stand, Rochu smacked him on the head with the huge iron door that had been ripped off its hinges.
“That's badass, Rochu, that's so badass.” Ashley cheered for Rochu.
Slowly and stealthily, we managed to sneak out of the vampire territory. It wasn't easy at all. It took us over two hours of walking before we left the territory—but then Ashley and I were weak and we were hiding almost every five minutes.
After getting out of the vampire territory, we walked another solid ten miles before we sat knowing we were safe—for the time being.
“What now?" Rochu asked me. “What do we do now?”
I squeezed his shoulder softly. “We stay together, always and forever.”
“Yeah, always and forever, that has a nice ring to it,” said Ashley.
“Always and forever." Rochu echoed.
