Chapter One - We look after each other

Jake’s P.O.V

“Come on little bro stay a little longer.” My older brother by four years said to me

“I need to get back Tyler, I am working in the morning and Rebecca will be home soon, not sure if she has her keys with her or not.” I laughed

Rebecca…she was my best friend, has been since we were five years old and she was now my roommate too, we moved in together after we finished our first year of University, we wanted to try the full staying on campus thing but turns out it wasn’t really for us, instead we found a place off campus and now been roommates for just over a year.

“How is Becca? I haven’t seen her in a while. You two still “Just friends” he said

“She is doing well busy with school and work.” I said “And yes still just friend’s bro that is all it is ever going to be. I have told you this a hundred times.” I added laughing

“You must of at least tapped that.” He said

“No Tyler I have not. I have not f****d my best friend and I never will.” I laughed shaking my head “We all don’t think with our d***s quite like you brother.” I added

“Maybe you should, when was the last time you got laid?” He asked

“None of your damn business.” I laughed

Tyler and I were very different, we had a very close relationship but still different. Tyler was a little rough around the edges, enjoyed partying, drinking and random s*x while I am a little more reserved and sensible, don’t tend to screw around but that has the way it has always been and I let him get on with it, he has always been there for me.

“That means too long then…” he smirked “Stay and I will help get you laid.” He added

“Thanks but no thanks.” I laughed

“Your loss little brother…” he said

I finished my drink, Tyler going to meet some of his friends and go out in the prowl as he calls it. I grabbed a taxi back to the apartment, Rebecca would be home from her shift at the Residential care home she worked in three nights a week. She does it for experience in that sort of work because she is studying to become a nurse. Plus I was working in the morning at six a.m. and it was already after eleven P.M. When I got back to the apartment Rebecca was sitting outside the door waiting for me…yup she must have forgot her keys again, it was bad habit for her, she done it all the time.

“You forgot your keys again?” I laughed

“Yes, I swear I am going to connecting them to my body somewhere so I don’t forget them.” She laughed.

She looked tired, then again she has just got off a fourteen shift and the job she does it not easy.

“I would have been home earlier if it wasn’t for Tyler.” I laughed

“How is Tyler?” Rebecca asked blushing a little.

She would never admit it to me but she has had a crush on him since she was twelve years older, she always blushed and got giddy around him or disappeared when he showed up but he wasn’t interested in her. Yes she was beautiful but she was not his type plus he usually went for older women or ones his own age, Rebecca a little young for him and the fact that she was my best friend too, he wouldn’t go down that road.

“He is fine…” I laughed shaking my head

She flipped me off before I gave her a hand up from the ground, letting us into our apartment. I laughed, wrapping my arm around her shoulder as we walked in. As soon as we did she kicked her shoes off, tossing her jacket on the chair and flopping down on the sofa.

“Busy night?” I asked going over

“Yes…very.” She sighed

“Maybe you should go get a shower and get into bed peaches.” I suggested offering my hand to her.

Rebecca smiled, taking my hand and I pulled her to her feet. She headed for a shower and I got the kettle on, she always had some berry tea before bed, seemed to help her relax and I made her a sandwich up too since she probably has not ate all day and I can’t have her trying to sleep on an empty stomach. Someone had to look after her while she is looking after everyone else.

“Better?” I asked as she appeared back through

“Yes much.” She smiled yawning.

“I made you tea and a sandwich cause you probably have ate…am I right?” I asked

She looked at the floor, nodding and waited for my usual lecture that I give her. I was only looking out for her and she knew that, she had to take better care of herself but I know how demanding her job can be.

“You sleeping in your own bed or mine tonight?” I asked

It was a common thing for us to share a bed, something we have done for a while but it was all innocent of course. Nothing had ever happened between us which most people find hard to believe. Guys and girls can be friends, even know many people think they can’t be. Rebecca and I have been best friends for over fifteen years, so we have proved everyone wrong thus far haven’t we?

“Your bed.” She said smiling widely

“That is what I thought…come on.” I laughed

Rebecca giggled, grabbing her tea and sandwich and we headed through to my bedroom. She was quick to slip under the covers and I got myself ready for bed before climbing in next to her. She offered me half her sandwich but changed her mind when I glared at her, my way of saying get it eaten, you haven’t ate today. She rolled her eyes but ate it anyway.

“Did you have a good night with Tyler?” She asked

“Yes I did, he wanted me to stay out later but I told him I couldn’t cause I needed to get home, he was not having it at first but finally made him realise that was what was happening.” I laughed

“Nothing unusual for him then.” She laughed

Rebecca finished off her food and tea before we got settled down. She turned around, her back to me but it never took long for her to reach behind her, tugging my arm, he way of telling me she wanted cuddles. I laughed, rolling around my front to her back and wrapped my arm around her.

“Goodnight Peaches, I love you.” I said

“Goodnight Jake…love you too.” She replied

It only took seconds for her breathing to become shallow and fall asleep. She would wake when I got up for work, she always did…she got up every morning I was working and made me coffee and breakfast to go while I get ready. It is what we done, we looked after each other. And once I go to work, she goes back to bed. It is just how our friendship worked.

I closed my eyes, soon following her lead and falling asleep. Tomorrow was going to be a long day, I needed the rest.
