Chapter 4: My Divorce, My Choice

902 Words
In the three years with the Burns family, Seles had never talked back. She always obeyed Mrs. Burns' every word and did as she was told. But now, she dared to speak up! Mrs. Burns clutched her chest and fell to the ground, pretending to be in pain. "Fine, you filthy b***h. You want to kill me and take my place as the mistress of this house." Seles shook her head. This old woman had no other skills besides pretending and bullying the weak. She stepped over Mrs. Burns and walked out of the room, only to come face to face with Magee, who had rushed over upon hearing the commotion. "You despicable wretch, did you insult my mother? Believe me or not, I will tell... Hey, you dare to hit me!" Seles slapped Magee on the other side of her face with the back of her hand. "That's right. I might insult your mother a bit, but if it were you, little slut, you'd see if I dare beat you to death." "You, you, you..." Magee looked at the servants who had gathered around, feeling both embarrassed and angry, but not daring to truly confront Seles. She took a step back and threw out some half-hearted reproach, "I think you've forgotten your place!" Seles smiled faintly, her gaze gradually changing. The frost covered her eyes, and despite her pale complexion, she exuded an aura that couldn't be underestimated. "These years, I indeed forgot my place, but now I remember. I am Algernon's wife, your sister-in-law, and you should show me at least some basic respect!" "You're a lunatic!" Magee shouted, commanding the servants to restrain Seles. But now, with just a glance from Seles, everyone froze in place, afraid to make a move. "Touch me if you dare. Do you want to live longer?" Her expression was calm, but her words were like hidden knives, piercing straight to the heart. The Burns family had never seen this side of Seles before, and they were all frightened and stupefied. Seles turned around with her hands behind her back and slowly scanned everyone present. As her gaze swept across, no one dared to meet her eyes. Finally, she said, "Carry that old hag out. Don't bother me today." Magee snorted through her nose, "Just wait and see!" After everyone left, Seles took a few steps forward, then suddenly collapsed to the ground. Everything she had given to Algernon over the years felt like a joke, and she had lost herself in the process. With dull, lifeless eyes, she silently stared at the ceiling. Tears that had been held back for a long time finally streamed down her face. Seles raised her hand to cover her eyes, letting the tears flow freely. After crying, she fell asleep on the bed without realizing it. Seles coughed a few times, struggling to sit up and reach for her phone. It was a call from Justin. He was a notorious playboy in City S, known for flirting with girls and getting into fights. In recent years, he had made several successful business deals and established several of his own brand companies, expanding his market to the Asian region. "Sel, do you miss your big brother? I have some juicy insider information here. Are you interested?" Encountering a familiar acquaintance who knew her inside out during her low moments, Seles' mood improved. She wrapped herself in the blanket and deliberately spoke in a cold tone, "Not interested." "Don't be so boring. Sometimes you flirt with me a bit too. No wonder Algernon shows no mercy to you." "If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up." "Hold on, let me speak." Justin paused for a moment and continued, "Your husband Algernon has proposed to your sister Marina. Marina will soon marry into a wealthy family, while you, Seles, will become the laughingstock of the entire City S." "Is there more?" Seles asked. As soon as she finished speaking, she suddenly couldn't suppress a cough, as if she was about to cough out her lungs. "You have a cold? It sounds so serious. I'll come pick you up and take you to the hospital right away," Justin's urgent voice sounded reliable, and Seles suddenly felt touched. "No need," Seles poured herself a glass of water and drank it to stop the coughing, but her body still felt weak. "But I need a favor from you... Have you seen the document I sent you?" "The divorce agreement? Wow, Sel, you're amazing!" "Help me find a reliable lawyer to draft a formal agreement." "No problem! Seles, three years have passed, and you finally realize that you want to leave that bastard Algernon! You've had enough, right?" Seles whispered to herself, "Three years..." "Yeah, three years ago, you gave up the position of a company president and ran off to be a daughter-in-law of a wealthy family." Even though they were on the phone, Justin still lowered his voice, trying to sound mysterious. "I'm telling you, Seles, it's time for you to have fun and come back to do big business!" "You're right. I've married into the Burns family for three years, met with my husband 31 times, had meals with him 8 times, received his gifts twice, and endured insults from the Burns family, countless times..." Seles counted, sparkling light welling up to her eyes.                                                                          "I wanted to escape this shitty life, once."
