SLOAN Having people back in the office was not much better than being alone. I suddenly had more to do again, but now I had to contend with the irritation of everyone around us. Valen had been tense since my plot at his board meeting. He didn’t mention anything again or use the fact that he now had a phone number to contact me with. I avoided any situation that trapped me in a space alone with him, unsure of what to expect. The packhouse had been oddly quiet that morning. Sadie was the only one at breakfast when I got there.
