Chapter Nine
Walking down the hallway to my apartment, I dragged my hands over my face, trying to scrub away the tiredness. Already I could hear the loud music pouring from my apartment. I pulled my keys out of my pocket, stopping in front of the door. I wished yet again that I could be normal, that I didn’t have to worry about Bridgette breaking into my apartment and acting like we were together.
Shoving my keys into the lock, I realized that I didn’t need to as my door swung open. Bridgette smiled up at me, her hair hanging around her bare shoulders. I pulled my keys from the door and she grabbed a handful of my shirt, pulling me into my apartment.
Kicking the door closed behind me, she pressed her body up against mine, and I grimaced. Stepping back, my back hit the door, and she moved closer. Her hips swaying to the beat of the rock music pouring from my living room speakers.
“Bridgette.” I said, rubbing my eyes. She was beautiful, her body toned and muscular. She was a well-oiled weapon, ready to be set off. She wasn’t for me, there was only one person that I wanted.
Now that I had a taste of Nevie, I wasn’t going to do anything to f**k it up.
“Talon?” she said, pressing a hand against my chest as she moved her body down against mine.
Gripping her shoulders, I pulled her back up. Moving her to the side before I stormed into my living room. Turning the music off, I looked back at her. “What are you doing here?”
“I came to see how you’re doing.” She said with a pout as she moved out of the hallway and into the living room. Her bare feet padding on the hardwood floors. Her toes were painted a bright green, matching her hair.
“I’m fine, you need to leave.” She moved closer to me and I backed up a step.
“What’s wrong, my love?”
“Bridgette.”
“Still mad at me?” She asked, rubbing her toe into the ground and looking down. “You should come home so we can work it out. Your mom misses you.”
“There is no us.”
“Talon, don’t say things you don’t mean.”
“Bridge, I’m not coming home.”
“You should, Tal. Things can be easy with us.” She said, looking at me through lowered lashes. “You don’t have to hide who you really are, our families would love it.”
“You should head back home.” I looked away from her, knowing that I needed to start getting ready for work and arranging my date with Nevie.
“I’m not here just to check on you.”
I looked back at her, gritting my teeth, “Then why?”
“There was an attack last week and I wanted to check out the area. Are you not keeping up with the news? Watching out for the signs like we were taught to do?”
I didn’t say anything as I moved around her. I hadn’t been watching for anything. I’d been doing my best to keep from thinking about how we’d been trained. Increasing my workouts and spending time with Nevie.
“Seriously, what’s gotten into you?” She asked, following me into the kitchen.
I didn’t say anything. How could I tell her that I was in love?
Opening the cabinet, I pulled out a glass before moving to the fridge to get the water pitcher. I couldn’t tell her about Nevie. I couldn’t put Nevie in danger like that. Bridgette wouldn’t hurt her, but the things that we hunted might.
“Nothing, I’m just trying to make a life for myself.” I poured myself a glass of water and took a sip.
“Look Talon, I get it. Work it out of your system, then come home.”
“Brid-”
“Just come with me to check it out.” She said, cutting me off. “I already pulled out your gear.”
Sighing, I sat the glass down. This was the problem with Bridgette. She didn’t understand that I didn’t want the life we’d been brought up to lead. One that would put us and our loved ones in danger. If I didn’t go with her, she could get hurt. My mom wouldn’t forgive me if something happened to her. I knew that she still held out the hope that Bridgette did. That one day we’d get together.
Looking past the kitchen, I noticed my leather jacket sitting on the couch beside my black bag. Letting out another long sigh, I looked at Bridgette. If I did this, she’d see it was probably nothing and then head home out of my life.
She clapped her hands together, seeing the look in my eye. I watched her bounce towards the living room. It shouldn’t take long. Then I’d head into work with Nevie and hopefully I could plan a date for her that would let her know that I meant what I said.
