Chapter 3: Hello? How Are You? (3)
***
“It was a great night. Did you enjoy yourself?” Daniel asked me as he drove me back to my place.
“Yes… it was fun. I’m sorry I drank that water that was for hand washing, I was really confused.” I apologized with my hand hanging low, why was there lemon scented water on the table like that anyways? Fancy restaurants are weird…
“Haha… no need to apologize, it was rather funny.” Danniel chuckled a bit under his breath. Somehow… as if that was possible, he looked even more handsome at that moment. “Can I tell you something?” He suddenly asked me, and I felt like whatever he wanted I would have agreed so I simply nodded my head and waited for him to say it.
“I’m a vampire.” Daniel said with a serious look on his face.
I tilted my head to the left, then to the right. I had to admit his teeth really were pointier than most people but I never took note of that. “Is that why you go out only at night?” I asked, half expecting him to say he was joking.
“Yes…” Daniel replied in a calm manner.
My hand that had unknowingly reached towards his face to touch him, he felt cold, almost abnormally so. My fingers traced his lips and entered his mouth were I felt up his pointy teeth. “So… um… am I going to be your victim or what?” I asked curiously.
“No, not at all, I wouldn’t be saying it to you if you were… I would have just-” Daniel paused, I felt as if he was going to say something so gruesome that he needed to stop himself before making me feel like running away from him. I saw a slight bit of guilt in his eyes as he continued. “I was… thinking of you as well after that night… I got worried thinking something else might have happened so I began visiting to make sure everything was alright. I wasn’t expecting you to ask me out.”
“And now?” I asked with a smile. “Do you actually like me? Enough not to want to suck my blood?” I questioned him and as I chuckled to myself and my own ridiculous words that came out of my mouth, he pulled me in and kissed me.
Nothing as silly as the kiss before… but an actual kiss, or at least that’s how I think kisses were in reality… not that I would know, I’d only read about them in books, seen them in movies… but in real life it felt… strangely familiar of a sensation, it was warm, comforting, a bit odd at times as I didn’t know where my tongue or my teeth or anything had to go… but I liked it more than I thought I would.
“Katelyn… I think you might be the person I’ve been looking for.” Suddenly he declared, that made me pause for a bit.
“Hm?” I asked, a bit confused and still hot and bothered by the kiss.
“You see, vampires have a long history of being attracted to others of similar past as them… and I think you might be someone special, or else fate would not have us meet like this.” Daniel explained it to me in such earnest that I felt bad for what I did next.
“Haha, sorry, there’s nothing special about me at all.” I laughed in his face. He might have been the first person to ever call me special but I wasn’t naïve enough to actually believe it. Especially not when it was delivered on top of all this vampire business. “I don’t really believe in such things, but I will be heading back now, thanks for the fun night.” I said with a smile.
“Wait… What do I need to do, so you can believe me?” He asked while getting out of the car.
“I don’t… know… um? Turn into a bat? Vampires can do that right?” I suggested.
“Way to stereotype us all…” Daniel murmured in a disgruntled way.
“What? You can’t become a bat? What a boring vampire are you?” I said in a joking manner, although at this point either all of this was a huge joke that I just wasn’t getting, or I had just went out on a date with someone completely insane… but also sexy so I could forgive him for it either way. Either he was bat s**t crazy or just a lousy comedian… I’ve seen worse men out there…
“Here, you can stab me.” Suddenly he said as he pulled out a knife that looked engraved from it’s sheath.
“Do what now?” I paused looking at it in my hands, I had taken it without even thinking.
“Nothing will happen so just do it. I’m a vampire I can’t die.” Daniel reassured me and although I was inclined to believe him before, now I was genuinely terrified of what he was making me do.
“Are you scared?” Daniel asked me as he stepped closer, he took my hands that held the knife and took it for himself again, then he revealed his left hand and traced the knife upon his skin before digging it inside. “It was rude of me to give it to you, a beautiful lady shouldn’t be told to hold a weapon, much less use it.” He seemed genuinely apologetic.
Then the impossible seemed to happen in front of my eyes, the wound he’d just made on his hand disappeared, there was no blood flow either… it just healed instantly without him doing anything.
“What?” I was amazed, surely my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me, I wasn’t that tired of work or the lack of sleep. I wasn’t seeing things… I truly did just witness this man dug a knife into his hand and it healed in a moment’s notice.
“Now do you believe me?” He asked while putting the knife away back in it’s sheath and placing it in my arms. “Here, I’ll give this to you now, so when we meet next time you can give it back to me if you don’t want to see me again because of this… I promise I won’t force you or look for you once you reject me…” He reassured me and then headed back to his car.
I rushed back into my apartment, still holding the knife. Once I was alone I confirmed it was real and it was sharp, just by running my finger across it I managed to cut myself, so I couldn’t imagine in what kind of pain Daniel must have been when he did that…
Do vampires feel pain?
Am I actually going insane?
Why did that rhyme for no reason?
My head was such a mess I headed straight for my bed and closed my eyes, I hoped I’d be able to think more clearly the following morning… but I was wrong…
