Chapter 9: Retribution (2) *** “Yes… about that, why do we do it? Killing vampires I mean…” I clarified although I was sure he understood me. My grandfather’s eyes glowed in a particular light that didn’t seem human, maybe it was also part to genetic modification on his part, as he opened his lips to speak his voice just as raspy and sharp as before.“Because they are the vermin of the earth, without us humans would be in danger.” He explained. “Vampires are vile and degusting creatures which do not seek to cohabitate with humans but rather try to use them as cattle. You’ll understand their underhanded methods as soon as you begin work.” My grandfather walked slowly towards the bookshelf and grabbed a thick book then handed it to me. “What’s this?” I asked while glancing at the all black cover, there wasn’t anything there, not a title nor an author’s name. “It’s a book to teach you about vampires. You have to read through it carefully and memorize it perfectly. Whenever you encounter such a wrenched beast you must use the tactics and knowledge written there to exterminate them. Well of course you won’t be alone, your father will be with you.” He continued, he looked rather indifferent at that moment despite the cruel words he spoke about vampires, it didn’t seem to affect him. They weren’t human thus not worthy of existence… I could see right through my grandfather’s righteous façade and it made me feel more on edge but I had to hide it. “How many vampires have you killed?” I asked with a stable enough voice. At that moment my grandfather’s interest seemed to be piqued as he headed over to his desk. Without moving I just sat there and watched him with the heavy book in my lap. “I knew you had a gift, to ask such a question you must be interested.” My grandfather looked gleeful as he pulled out what seemed to be a glass box filled with smaller glass boxes and inside what I saw was teeth, they came in pairs in each box, all cleaned and polished as they could be, and rather pointy… “Those are your trophies?” I remarked while examining them carefully. “Yes, in my lifetime I’ve killed over three hundred vampires and I’ve kept their teeth as the evidence of my righteousness.” My grandfather remarked, while I was examining the box I couldn’t help but notice, each smaller box was dated, some went all the way back to 1971. ‘righteousness’ such a silly word… How could murder ever be right? “It’s really impressive… I’ll be late for the next class if I stay any longer…” I said while standing up. My grandfather quickly placed the box with teeth back into his desk. “Say… would you like to join the hunting group next month?” He suddenly asked me, I froze not really knowing how to reply to him. “Even if you don’t kill any of them, you can at least come and watch, it would be helpful for your future development.” My grandfather continued. “Right, I’ll come. Give me the date when available.” I said while heading to the door. I didn’t so much as say anything else, fearing that he’d hear it in my voice how much I truly didn’t wish to be there… But it’s not like I am any better than them… and neither is Daniel… Killers they’re all killers that would rather die than accept anyone different than themselves… Daniel… “Girl are you alright? You look pale as a sheet…” Another one of my classmates Becca snapped me out of my daze. “I’m fine.” I said as I quickly walked past her in a hurry but she followed me regardless. “You don’t seem alright. Maybe you should go to the nurse’s office.” Becca continued as she grabbed onto my arm. “Let go of me…” I said as I turned back, she looked somewhat meek before but at that moment she was strong willed. “We’re going to the nurse, what if something is wrong with you?” Becca asked persistently. “I don’t need to, I’m fine.” I reassured her as I pulled back my arm away from her grasp. “I’m worried about you.” Becca said as I walked away. It didn’t make any sense to me, we barely spoke, we only ever interacted when we happened to be seated together. It’s not like we were close or had similar interests or hobbies. Yet she claimed to care about me. It sounded ridiculous. “This day is only becoming worse by the moment…” I mumbled under my breath as I hid into the bathroom. Although I wasn’t sick, my head did feel dizzy, it was probably because of the thousand things that happened at once. As I sat there on the closed bathroom stall I heard someone walking in harshly, loud voices began filling the room but I tried to ignore them while lost in my own thoughts, until I heard it… “What were you going talking to that girl huh Becca?” A voice louder than the rest was heard and then someone slamming against my stall door. All I could see from where I was sitting was their legs, there were a lot of ppl, maybe about five if there weren’t more that I wasn’t seeing. Of course like a coward I sat there… I didn’t care step outside. “I was just talking to her, that’s none of your business!” Becca yelled back and I heard someone whistling in the back. “So you think you’re so tough now, huh? Your own sister’s missing and you’re out here talking to the very person responsible for that.” The snarky remarks, the whispers amongst the rest of the group. Honestly university didn’t feel much different than high school… sometimes it was ever worse. “Let go of me!” I could hear Becca screaming. “Pull her hair! Pull her hair!” Someone encouraged. I didn’t want to just sit there but I was outnumbered and even if I wasn’t… what can I do? I’m not strong, nor do I want to be ridiculed… “Tell you what, if you get that girl Katlyn go come to the back of the gym tonight at nine… We won’t hurt you.” A girl’s voice, likely the one that’s controlling these brain dead minions behind her, spoke up. She seemed cocky in her tone, each word felt like nails on a chalkboard to my ears tho. “Do you agree?” The girl asked again as Becca was silent. “Fine, I agree!” Becca said and I could hear how she stumbled down after the main girl had let go of her hair. “Good, and if you don’t, you better be there instead to get your ass beat.” That same girl’s voice spoke one last time then I heard the door to the bathroom closing. I could see that Becca was still inside. “f**k…” She mumbled under her breath and then I decided to walk outside. “Are you alright?” I asked as I approached her cautiously. “Not really… wait… Katlyn?” Becca turned around so quickly I felt the gush of wind hit my face from her turning around. “I’m sorry about that, they bullied you because of me…” I said in a low voice, I felt incredibly embarrassed by it all. “It’s fine… I’m responsible as well.” Becca said while checking her face in the mirror and washing off her hands. She proceeded to fix her hair as I asked her. “Responsible about what?” I raised an eyebrow. “My sister missing…” Becca remarked, then I realized it, she was Jecca’s sister, even that one girl mentioned it. “I wasn’t aware-” Before I could even finish my sentence she continued. “We’re from different mothers, that’s why we don’t look alike… and unlike her family, mine isn’t made of hunters…” Becca’s words brought me back like a slap in the face with a cold fish would. “You know about all that?” I questioned. “Yeah… all that nonsense… I hate it all…” Becca sighed heavily as she lowered her eyes. “And the reason I spoke to you was cause I thought you and I were kind of similar…” She continued, her voice was somehow deeper than before. “I didn’t mean to be rube before…” I couldn’t speak another word before she headed to the door. “Don’t come to the school tonight, alright? I’ll deal with them.” Becca kindly reminded me and headed out before hearing my answer. Though I wasn’t planning on going in the first place… I was too scared to go… Only later would I realize how much I’d regret that decision of mine…
