Chapter 6 Approximately at eleven-thirty, Dietrich left my place, having fallen in bedazzled love with the award-winning movie: enlightened, dizzy, and joyous. I turned off the flat-screen and prepared for an all-nighter with a horror novel. Being a bloodsucker meant I didn’t get much sleep, at least during the post-midnight hours. Just as I was getting settled in to the four hundred pages of mind-numbing and spine-clenching terror, the call came shortly after midnight. My cellphone rang once, twice, and then three times. I certainly would have taken it on the first ring, but the device sat on the quartz island in the kitchen, and I was semi-settled in the sitting room, preparing for my reading marathon. I couldn’t imagine who was calling at such a late hour. Had Dietrich left something
