Supper was a fancy affair, much different than the simple meals Cody ate with his parents in his old life. Cody wondered if he could bury some of the expensive silverware and plates somewhere safe so he could dig them up if he ever got back to his old life to pay for college. The Branches entertained Rice, Captain Talbot, Miles, and Martha. They had salted beef with potatoes and gravy with biscuits and fresh vegetables. Caroline played the dutiful host, keeping the conversation lively while silverware scraped plates, and Lila added cantankerous comments about the North whenever she could fit one in.
