The expedition team followed the Jadatani hunter through the forest along a meandering stream until they came to a broad clearing. Across a small grassy field, Claire saw a large oval compound crafted from bamboo and thin, upright logs. The leader led them forward to a small opening past a plot of tilled earth, lush with fluttering heart shaped leaves. Among the sprouting plants knelt a group of bare-breasted women who looked up from their work as the team approached.
In the field beyond, Claire saw children and toddlers gathering grass into bundles. Startled, she remembered her miscarriage. She closed her eyes and steeled herself; trying to force the memory away, reminding herself that it was best it had happened. But try as she might, she couldn"t make herself forget.
