-Alana POV-
Breath!
I gasp and open my eyes. The man is hovering over me. He stumbles backward surprised. Everything comes back and I know what I have to do. I quickly lunge at the guy. I grab him and throw him on the wall hard. He falls unconscious.
I look at Kingston who looks relieved when he sees me but still has a pained expression on his eyes.
I walk to the man and search him for the keys. When I find them, I go over to Kingston's cell and open it.
“Let’s go.” He says and leads the way. He runs and I run behind him.
We are both naked as we run but at this point, this man has seen all of me so I don’t feel the need to be bashful at this moment. I am on fight mode now.
We come to a fork of halls. He stops and smells the air. He is smelling for clean and natural earth scents that will lead us outside.
“This way.” He says and we start running again. A guard crosses our path but Kingston pushes him and the guard’s head hits the wall. We don’t stop, we continue and we keep finding more guards and scientists that cross our path. But we easily take them down. I can smell the outside is close but then I stop.
“What is it?” Kingston asks as he stops with me.
I look to a door where I can smell Dr. Ackel's scent.
“Alana, not the time.” He says.
"Yes, it is." I say and kick the door open.
Acker jumps back from his chair startled.
"I'm here to keep that promise." I say.
He runs to his desk to where there is a gun. I quickly tackle him. He flies to the wall hitting it and he falls to the ground.
He grunts in pain. I pick him up and see some needles sticking out from his lab coat. I take one out and immediately smell the wolfsbane. I growl and stick the needle in his neck, emptying the content. I let him go as he grunts.
"Wolfsbane is a nuisance to us and can weaken us but it is lethal to humans." I say. "Especially in the amount I just gave you."
"No!- uh!" He grunts and grabs his chest.
His eyes widen as he takes a few raspy breaths. His eyes go up and he falls to the ground.
"He's dead. Let's go." Kingston says from behind me."
“Fine.” I almost growl.
We head out and continue following Kingston. We end up in a room with a huge metal door. Kingston and I continue running towards the two guards guarding the door but one of the men sees us and quickly pushes a button on the wall. An alarm starts sounding.
I kill one of the men and Kingston takes care of the other one. We both walk over to the door and start pulling it. The huge metal door makes a loud noise as it drags open through the floor.
The cool clean wind hits us immediately. It feels refreshing. I look at Kingston and he looks at me.
“Ready?” He asks.
I nod.
We start running out of the doors that lead through a cave opening. When we get outside, there are three more guards. I run and punch one, he goes flying into a tree. When I look to my side, Kingston has already taken care of the other two.
There is snow at our feet and it is night. The moon is high up in the sky. We look around and I have no idea where we are but one thing is clear. Kingstone was right, we are definitely far North. We can hear multiple footsteps coming from inside the cave.
“Find them!!” We hear someone yell.
“Where do we go?” I ask Kingston panicking.
“I don’t know but we have to move. We’ll figure it out on the way.” He says.
I nod. We both shift and take off running. I follow him. It is dark but the moon shines bright. We run and run but nothing seems to change. The scenery is the same. Trees, snow, and dark skies.
An hour later, we finally stop to take a breather. I shift and sit leaning on a tree while I try to catch my breath.
Kingston also shifts and kneels also trying to catch his breath. He looks up and around the forest. “I have no idea where we are.”
He gets up to his full height and starts smelling the air.
I know this is not the time for this but I can help look at his naked body.
I hear Hestia give a small gasp. ‘Oh, my goddess. He is hun-’
‘Shut up!’ I say cutting her off.
‘You're the one looking at it!’ She says.
‘It’s right on my face, what else am I going to do?!’
‘A lot of things..." Her voice is needy. "We can do a lot of things with him and his big-’
‘Shut up! Focus.’ I interrupt her again.
“There is a faint burn wood smell coming from that direction.” Kingston says looking into the woods.
He then looks at me. “Can you still run?”
“Yea.” I say nodding.
“Ok, if not, then... you can always ride me.” He says and smirks.
I squint my eyes at him.
‘Um... yes?’ Hestia says.
‘I thought you didn’t like the guy!’ I say annoyed.
‘I still don’t want a mate... but a night with this man would be the highlight of our lives.’
I roll my eyes and shift ignoring both Kingston and Hestia. He chuckles. I know he likes teasing me.
When he shifts, we start running in the direction of the burnt smell.
A few minutes later, the smell gets stronger. We slow our pace as we come out of the forest and into a clearing. We look in front of us to what looks like what used to be a packhouse. But it’s completely burned down.
We both shift back.
“Looks like this was done maybe four or five days ago.” Kingston says. We walk towards the debris of the packhouse that is now covered in snow.
Kingston kneels and picks something up from the debris.
I get closer and look at what he has in his hands. “Is that...”
He nods. “Rupert's pack.”
He holds a picture of where there are a few people posing and one of them is Alpha Rupert.
“But how?” I look around. His pack is completely destroyed, they weren't even able to call for help. Their pack was smaller than ours but they should still have been able to call for help.
“This doesn’t make sense... unless... it was from the inside.” Kingston says.
“There's no other pack that we can trust now.” I say.
He nods. “I trust you. We are in this situation together.”
I nod agreeing.
“But I know that one of us has a traitor in their pack. And we need to weed them out.” He says.
I nod again agreeing but I am scared. I hope to the goddess that is not in mine. I can’t imagine one of mine betraying me.
I then notice that Kingston stares at me like he is examining me. “You are tired." He says. "Let’s rest.”
I shake my head. “I can keep going.”
“No, we should rest.” He says. “The good thing is that I now know where we are.”
“And the bad?” I ask.
“Well... there is a town nearby here but that’s probably where the enemy will be looking for us since it’s the closest. We need to head to the next town over and that is a few hours away.”
“That should be where Alpha Aarons pack is from, right?” I ask.
He nods. “Yes, but as we said before, we can’t trust anyone else. It’s best if we get home ourselves.”
I nod agreeing.
He goes through a pile of clothes. Most of them are burned but he finds a shirt that is undamaged but dirty. He hands it to me and then keeps looking till he finds a pair of pants which he puts on. I put the shirt on and continue looking around.
“There are no dead.” I say.
He nods. “Whoever did this, didn’t want to leave any evidence.”
He walks to the forest area with a blanket that he found and places it on the ground behind a tree.
“Let’s rest here.” He says.
I sit leaning on the tree. He sits next to me and does the same. We sit touching each other's shoulders but I feel completely comfortable with him. And I can tell that so does he. But then he has to ruin it by talking.
“If you get cold, my amazing big arms and muscles can take care of you. They never fail.” He says.
To my surprise, Hestia doesn't like that line.
‘That was stupid.’ She says and I completely agree.
I look at his smirking face and this time I don’t care. I punch him on the ribs.
“Ow, s**t that actually hurt!” He rubs his ribs but laughs a little.
I lean my head back and close my eyes ignoring his grunting.
I fall asleep but later wake up with a gasp. I look around and I am still in the forest. It’s still dark.
I hold my head. (That stupid dream.)
“Are you okay?” I hear Kingston's concerned voice next to me.
I stare at him and he stares back at me. I nod slowly and lean back.
“Sorry.” I whisper. I can feel him still staring at me but I ignore it and try to go back to sleep.
When I wake up again, I can see the light of dawn coming from the trees. But something is odd. I feel too comfortable.
My eyes widen when I realize that I am under Kingston's arms with my head resting on his chest.
(Oh... fuck.)
I stay motionless like a statue not knowing if I should move and risk waking him or stay and keep him sleeping.
It doesn't matter because my body won’t react.
‘I hate to admit it but... it feels nice. I like his warmth.’ Hestia says.
‘What is it with you? You are hot with him and then cold and then hot again.’ I say irritated.
‘I am a complicated being okay so shut up... leave me alone.’ She pouts.
I sigh. I look up and look at his beautiful sleeping face. I can’t deny that he is the most handsome man I have ever met. And he is much more different than I thought he was... except for the arrogant part.
“See, you can’t take your eyes off of me.” He says still with his eyes closed but now with a smile.
(Piece of s**t!)
I quickly move away and he laughs. I narrow my eyes at his beautiful smiling face and I am about to say something but then we perk up as we hear voices in the distance.
“We need to go.” Kingston says alarmed. We can smell the human scent.
We quickly take our clothes off and shift, taking our clothes with us as we bolt out.
