“Is this some kind of joke, I’m not following properly?” I stood in office of Alpha Kristoff, The leader of the Crescent Lunar pack. “The email you sent said that you had an urgent package that needed to be hand carried from the West to the East Coast. That it was top secret and need to be kept out of danger. How is a human teenager a vital package?” My anger rose leaning over the desk facing the Alpha.
Alpha Kristoff’s eyes had shifted during my questioning from brown to now a silver tone. “I understand you are a guest here at my pack, but I do remind you that I am the Alpha here and you will remember that before I rip your throat out and shipping you back in a box to your Alpha.” Alpha Kristoff wolf calmly growled. “Now sit your a*s down and let’s be civil.”
I took a deep breath in and sat down awaiting his orders “Yes Alpha.” My annoyance was still present in my response.
“I asked for you to come to retrieve a human teenager, yes. Her name is Hayden Allister she is 20 years old. She is being stationed on the Marine base in South Carolina as a Naval Corpsman. This human is special and needs to be protected. As a Beta the less you know the better. You are not to tell her you are here to protect her because she does not know how unique she is to our pack. I will email your Alpha more details tomorrow once you leave. Your plane leaves tomorrow at 9am. Any questions?” Kristoff leaned back in his chair placing his folded hands on his lap.
“No sir.” I stood and left to go back to my hotel room.
The girl’s name was Hayden I believe, but honestly did not care enough to remember, sat 3 rows a head of me. Her headphones in her ears. She spent the next 8 hours reading and texting, only getting up once or twice to use the restroom. She was quiet, thank the Goddess.
I was the Beta of one of the top militarized wolf packs in the US, and here I am being a babysitter a child. What the hell is wrong with this picture.
“Why is she so special? She is just an average looking human.” Abaven my wolf fumed to me starting to get anxious and wanting to run. When the plane began to taxi on the tarmac, I rub my eyes and yawn waiting for the rest of the people behind me to deboard.
As the air rotates through the plane her scent hit me full force. Lilies and Pineapples. It was a sweet new smell, and it was nice. Abaven was getting aroused and tried to push towards her.
“Now how was I going to get her attention?” I thought to my wolf while pulling out my phone. It was 9:55pm and an idea came to mind.
I pulled ahead of her and knelt to tie my shoe. Hayden crossed over to the bathroom and tumbled over me. “Score!” Abaven roared to me. I smile and turn my attention to the girl laying on the ground.
“I’m sorry Mam! I did not see you there.” I apologized while lifting her up off the ground. Starring into her emerald green eyes, a feeling rushed over me. There was something special about her just like her alpha said, but I cannot put my thumb on it. Her brown hair falls around her heart shape faced. She was about 140 pounds but felt as small as a kitten in my arms.
Gazing up at her green eyes I see her mouth fall opening while checking me out. I joke to her, “See anything you like?” My arms still holding her up.
“I’m Christopher Abaven Jones. What’s your name?” I asked her in a dominate tone, her heart raced faster as I do. A grin formed on my face as she reacted to my question by tensing in my hands, Abaven pushing forward stimulated.
“My name is Nicole.” She says in a small voice. She was naturally beautiful, though I doubt she truly knew it. I set her down. Was her name Nicole? I thought It started with an H.
“So, where are you headed Ms. Nicole?” I flash her a pearly white smile.
“I’m reporting…I mean I’m.” She looked down trying to decide if she wants to tell me the true. I bit my lower lip trying not to smile again. She was a funny one this one.
“Are you new to the base?” I point to her bags on the floor trying to not sound creepy.
“Yes. Those.” She nodded her head. “Yes, I’m reporting to my first duty station on the base.” She shifted her body weight to her right hip and crosses her arm. A small chuckle escapes me as she tries to look tough. I lean down and smell her again, her intoxicating smell feeling my mind. How can a human smell so damn good?
Looking down at my watch I see its 10pm and the last shuttle for the base just left for the night. “How about I make you a deal?” I growl softly into Nicole’s ear. My lips softly touching her ear, I could feel her take a sharp breath in, yet she did not pull away. “By the time you make it down the stairs and get to the USO, if the base shuttle isn’t there yet, you’ll let me drive you to the base to check in.”
She turned away with a shiver and grabbed her bags. “I am sorry, I need to go, thank you though.”
I let her walk out of sight before I ran off to get the car. How long was too long to wait in the dark? At least it was 73 and clear out tonight so she will not be cold.
Getting into the car I called my Alpha. “Captain, I got the package back. But you need to know something.” I paused not sure how to tell him the package was a human.
“Look Jones, you’re my Beta, I trust you. Just get back to the pack house we need to get ready for tomorrow.” The sound of anger swelled in his words. The call ended before I could even break the news.
“Well then, I guess she’s our problem for the night,” My wolf howls with excitement as I put the car in reverse and drove towards the arrival pick up location.
I saw her sit there on the bench, she almost looked innocent. She seems likes a nice girl but very guarded. Why did the Crescent pack ask us to watch over her? Why did the Crescent pack even care or know about her? A million thoughts ran through my mind as I pulled up to the curb to get her.
“Come on princess. Let me get you to base. Processing starts at 530 tomorrow.” I walked over to her and grab her bags putting them in my trunk. Opening her door, I let her get it, the faint hint of wolf smell lingering behind from her.
“Here, give me your phone. I will put my number in it in case you ever need anything. Call and text me at any time.” I took the phone from her and handed it back with a smile.
“So, you’re a devil duck?” I turned and jokingly ask her while we drove out of the airport.
“A devil duck?” She softly questioned the term while fidgeting with the edge of her shirt. I could tell she was nervous but willing to let her guard down.
“Yeah. It’s a name Marines give to the sailors who work on Marine base since they aren’t actually at sea.”
“Oh, I see.” She looks out the window. “So, Mr. Christopher Abaven Jones,” She said my name in a mysterious way lifting her eyebrows to create the effect. “Tell me about yourself.”
I could not help but laugh which in turned caused her to smile and giggle. She turns back to look out the window resting her elbow on the window seal and nibbled on her index knuckle softly.
I took a breath, smiling, and tried to control my laughter. “Well where should I start? I have been stations here for the last 6 years and am going career here. I am a 0311 by choice. I like along walks on the beach and my favorite color is blue.”
“You realize I have zero clue what a 0311 is right?” A mocking tone jaded across her lips.
“Well princess” I mocked back to her “A 0311 is a prestige group of people. We are the first on the ground and always in the fight.”
“Oh, you’re the crayon eaters of the military, infantry. Got it” she suppressed a giggle.
I smacked her thigh gently with my right hand. “Hey now! That hurts! What about you? Tell me about yourself and what is it that you do duckling?”
“Me? Let’s see.... I grew up on a pack estate even though I am human, my parents oversee a few of their businesses there. I was a cheerleader in high school and got a scholarship to UCLA. Gummy worms are my jam. Hmmm. I want to just be normal. Oh, I am just an 8404. You know the elite of the elite.”
“Oh, really now? Well Doc, look at you being a devil duck and all.” I flashed her a cute smile while arriving at the base gates. I pulled out my ID and scan pass the sentries. “You see that white build over there? “Pointing to a build on the right.” That is the processing center, you will head there tomorrow and check in. Make sure to keep the packet they give you; it will have your schedule for Indoc over the next week. It should show you having 4-5 different skills testing.”
Drifting into a parking lot, a block down from the processing center, I turn off the car. “This is temporary check in. They will give you a barracks room for the next week before moving you to your company barracks.” I got out the car and open her door.
“You got my number, right?” Nicole nods and grabs her bags.
She turns around and faced me. “Hey Chris.” I stopped texting and turn back to her as she drops her bags.
“Hmm?” I respond looking up from my phone as Nicole hugs me tight. My heart begins to race. Her scent giving me a high sensation again.
“Thank you for everything. I hope we can be friends.” She squeaked into my chest.
“I hope so too Little Duck.” I squeezed her back and watch as she walked into the building to check in.
As I got back into my car, I cannot help but smile. There was something about this girl. She was funny and smart. She was not a wolf chaser. Why is this girl special to the Crescent pack and why is she here now?
“We should text her tomorrow to hook up!” Abaven baited me.
“I don’t know dude. This one is different.” I picked up the phone calling my Alpha Eric Taylor to let him know that the package was safe.
“Come on Asshole pick up.” The phone continues to ring. “You ordered me pick up a package cross country and won’t pick up my damn call.” I try to mind link Eric, but his communication is off.
“Screw it.” I throw my phone down on the passenger chair and drive back to the pack house.
