Chapter 9 An Unexpected Opportunity

746 Words
I didn't know if it was fear or rage, but I felt a lump in my throat, making me dizzy. I wanted to scream and shout, but I couldn't. If they realized I knew what was happening, the consequences might be severe. My home, my children, my ten years of affection... I bit down hard on the blanket, holding back my desperate sobs. Memories of the past ten years whirled through my mind, making it hard to breathe. Everything went black as I passed out. When I woke up, my mind was clearer than ever. I couldn't just lie here and let them control me. I had to find out the truth. Why were they doing this to me? Cheating and infidelity were bad enough, but poisoning me? They wanted me dead. This was a death trap. I had to break free to save myself. I stared at the corner of the room where the camera was. If Aidan suspected something was off with me, he wouldn't leave the surveillance unchecked. I had to find a way to disable that "eye". But doing so under their watchful eyes without alerting them seemed impossible. Then, miraculously, an opportunity presented itself. In the evening, I heard Cathy's voice in the hallway, followed by Aidan on the phone. It sounded like he had come home early, or maybe he never left. His voice was loud enough for me to understand that there was a power outage in the area. Excitement surged through me. This was my chance! Just as I was about to get up, the door handle turned. I quickly lay back down, holding my breath. The room was dim. As I squinted my eyes, I saw Aidan peek in before stepping out. The door remained slightly ajar, allowing me to hear Cathy's irritated complaint. "Why did the power go out? Dinner isn't ready! What did the property management say? When will it be fixed?" "They're checking. If it doesn't come back soon, we'll go to a restaurant," Aidan replied calmly. "Really? What about her medicine?" Cathy clearly sounded excited. "We'll deal with it later. She's not waking up anytime soon!" "I'll get Alex dressed then!" Cathy's footsteps hurried away. Soon, I heard the car start downstairs. Despair washed over me, tears streaming down my face. But there was no time for sorrow. I had to act fast. My heart was pounding with excitement and fear as I stood up. I still felt rather weak, my legs trembling non-stop. Then, I dragged a chair over and climbed up to the corner of the room. As expected, the camera was still there. I took it down, examining it quickly, unsure how to disable it without leaving a trace. Panicked, I jumped down and ran to the bathroom, filling the sink with water and tossing the camera in. I hurried back to the bedside table, searching for my phone. I hadn't used it in so long, so I couldn't remember where I'd put it. I needed to call Hailey and ask her to help me find out what was in the medicine. Hailey Ziegler was my childhood friend and classmate, the only person I could rely on here in New York. However, I tore through every drawer, every nook, and cranny of the nightstand, until I was exhausted and still empty-handed. My heart pounded wildly like it was going to explode. I slumped over the bed, panting, tears stinging my eyes. Wiping them away, I sighed in frustration. How had I let myself get into this state? After catching my breath, I calmed myself down, got up, and walked carefully to the door, peering outside. The house was eerily silent, wrapped in darkness. Moving swiftly and quietly, I slipped out of the room. Barefoot, I quickly made my way to Aidan's study. I needed to find my phone before the power came back on and the surveillance was restored. If I couldn't act quickly enough, there might not be a second chance. I hadn't been to the study in ages, but I was sure Aidan had hidden my phone there. Heading straight for his desk, I found his computer still warm from use, indicating he had been there recently. I bent down to open the drawers to look for my phone, but they were all locked. Aidan never used to lock his drawers. But now, every single one was locked. Frustration and panic surged, and I stomped my foot anxiously.
