Chapter 4 A Battle of Wits

686 Words
Just when I thought there was no way out, Cathy walked in. Aidan's eyes were still on me as I raised the bowl to my lips and pretended to take a sip. Only then did he smile with satisfaction, shifting his attention to Cathy. He stood up to take the tray from her. As he moved to take the tray, his tall frame blocked Cathy's view, giving me the perfect chance to quickly tilt the bowl and spill its contents onto the dark-patterned blanket covering me. Then, I brought the bowl back to my lips, pretending to finish the rest, leaving a bit of the medication clinging to the rim. In reality, I had to spit the medication I had sipped back into the bowl, making it appear as if I had just left a bit over. By the time Aidan turned around with the tray, I had already pulled the blanket to my side, hiding the mess, and handed the bowl to Cathy. "I'll do it myself!" I said. Aidan looked at me approvingly, placing the tray on the bedside table and kissing my forehead. He picked up the breakfast bowl, ready to feed me. I playfully pushed him away, pretending to be bashful. "You should go to work! Don't fuss over me!" A charming smile flashed across his handsome face as he pinched my gaunt cheek. "All right, I'll head to work. Finish your breakfast and get some rest. I'll try to come home early to be with you and Alex." "Okay," I said, gazing at him with feigned longing. "Go on! Come home early!" I was terrified he might try to straighten the blanket beside me. He left without exchanging any glances with Cathy. With just Cathy and me in the room, I said, "Cathy, is Alex still asleep?" At this moment, I was hoping to get rid of her, too. "I'll go check on him. Take your time eating and call me if you need anything," Cathy replied, leaving the room. I listened to her footsteps fade before taking a few bites of food. Then, I returned to the bed, pulled the blanket over me, and placed the tray on top, slowly eating. In fact, I had no appetite, but I was shaking with nerves. Still, I forced myself to eat. First, I needed to maintain my strength. Second, I had to be cautious because there might be surveillance in the room. For security reasons, I installed cameras in every room. Having seen too many bad things happen, I wanted to be safe. Little did I know it would become a trap for myself. Aidan had protested about the surveillance, joking that we'd have no privacy and that our bedroom activities could end up being like a p**n movie. But I had insisted on turning the cameras on only when I wasn't around or during specific times. Over time, the cameras in our bedroom were rarely on. Now, I wasn't sure if they were on or off. After finishing my meal, I discreetly cleaned the blanket with a tissue, soaking up the spilled medication and flushing it down the toilet. I played with Alex for a while before pretending to be exhausted and returning to bed, feigning sleep again. I couldn't detect anything unusual about them, and I couldn't let them detect anything unusual about me. Aside from Cathy's perfume, I hadn't found anything out of the ordinary. There were plenty of reasonable explanations for the scent. But pretending to sleep was pure torture. To make it believable, I stayed perfectly still, eyes closed, endlessly pondering all the possibilities and my next move. My nerves were on edge, my mind wound tight, and fear seeping through me kept me hyper-alert. Staying in one position and pretending to be deeply asleep was extremely excruciating. I realized that staying awake was more terrifying than being in a drugged sleep. Maybe it was the sleepless night, the exhaustion from tension, or my general weakness, but eventually, I drifted off. But even when I was sleeping soundly, my heightened senses picked up on someone approaching me.
