CHAPTER THREEThe Duke hesitated.
Then the girl put her hands together as if she was praying and looked up at the sky.
He was sure that she was going to take one step forward and fall into the water.
He moved a little closer as he then said gently,
“That would be an extremely stupid thing to do.’
She started and gave a cry.
Instinctively she moved backwards as she turned to look at him.
He saw that she was extremely lovely, in fact very beautiful.
She had large frightened eyes in a small pointed face and fair golden hair that seemed like a halo.
“Go – away!” she called out and her voice was low and frightened.
“I have an idea,” the Duke said slowly, “that you intend to fall into that dark unpleasant-looking water beneath you. I do beg you to do nothing of the sort.”
