“Ammunition!” the gunnery sergeant with the 66th shouted. “Do we have any more ammunition for the smooth-bores?” Jack passed the message onto Blackwood, who looked down from his horse with his face lined with pain. “No, Windrush,” he said. “We only have what we captured from the mutineers.” Jack nodded. “The smooth-bores are running short, Blackwood.” “Fire what you have, then take the guns to the rear,” Blackwood decided. The loss of half their artillery seriously weakened the British defence.
