There were a number of people striving for a breath of fresh air and sitting on the deck, most of them cross-legged in a manner that few Europeans could achieve. Others were playing games of cards, throwing dice or nursing children and there were a great number of them. But there was no sign of the man she wanted to see and she stood there for a long time wondering how she could communicate with him and thinking it very foolish that, while he had asked for her name, she had not asked him for his. ‘Perhaps I shall see him tomorrow,’ she mused.
