She looked up at him as she did so and said as she rose, “You look exactly like I thought you would, my Lord, and I have been longing to meet you.” “Why?” the Earl enquired. He had a way of asking questions in monosyllables that seemed frightening to Marista, but Letty merely smiled. “If you lived here, you would know that was a foolish question,” she replied. “Nothing ever happens from day to day and from month to month. Then suddenly vans started arriving at The Castle and it was naturally very exciting.” “I believe your sister feels rather differently about it.” The way the Earl spoke made Letty look at Marista and then back at him. “You have not been cruel to Marista?”
