He closed the door behind him as he spoke and walked towards Marista. As he did so, she instantly disliked the expression in his eyes and it was with the greatest difficulty that she did not run away from him. Last night he had seemed to menace her and now that they were alone she was acutely conscious of danger. “I am sure, my Lord,” she said quickly, “that you would like some refreshment. I am afraid we can only offer you coffee, but I will tell my maid to make some.” She would have passed Lord Dashford as she spoke to reach the door, but, as she tried to do so, he put out his hand and held onto her wrist saying, “I don’t need coffee, but you!” He pulled her towards him as he spoke and Marista gave a little cry of fear.
