Chapter 9

2075 Words

Allie doesn’t believe Dori and is convinced she and my grandma plotted to get Allie to stay at my house, so we’re in my truck, driving to her apartment in Lake Starlight to see if there is in fact water damage. “Don’t you know how much they meddle in people’s lives?” Allie’s foot taps along the floorboard. “Always pushing people together. To think I wanted in on that at one point.” She shakes her head while she absentmindedly rubs her swollen belly. For whatever reason, I have to fight the urge to reach over and do the same. “You were upset that they didn’t ask you to take part in my family’s barbecue this summer,” I remind her. Both women had shown up with an agenda. She huffs. “And you were really upset that they wanted to set me up with either your best friend or your stepbrother.”
