The night before

Ariah pov Hearing the Buzz of my alarm, I can't help but jump out of bed, excitement coursing through me. One more sleep..... I think to myself. Grabbing my fluffy pink, dressing gown, rushing down the stairs, and into the kitchen, quickly taking my seat at the table. Mum places a plate of pancakes in front of me and sighs as she watches me drown them in maple syrup. " Ariah, that is enough, sweetheart. You know too much sugar makes you hyper." Mum says as she turns to continue cooking. " Sorry, Mumma, I got distracted, I can't stop thinking about tomorrow's ball. I can't believe I'm finally old enough to go!" I belong to the White Moon pack, and every year, we hold a Christmas ball for all members who are of age. I turned eighteen last week, and that means I am finally old enough to go. My best friends Kate and Sarah and I have been planning for the ball for so long, our dresses having been chosen months ago. As luck would have it, Kate and Sarah are fated mates, which made them going to the ball together an easy choice. Me, on the other hand, having only just turned eighteen, I am yet to find my mate, so I'm going to the ball with one of my older brothers' friends. My brother, Aiden, found his mate at last years ball and has been a love sick puppy ever since. He organised for his friend, Alex, to accompany me to the ball as he is also yet to find his mate. Finishing my pancakes in record time, I blow mum a kiss and run back upstairs to get ready to meet my friends. We are meeting at the local salon, so we can get our nails done for tomorrow. Pulling on some leggings and an oversized sweater, I head for the door ready to meet the girls. Entering the salon, I immediately spot Kate and Sarah already choosing nail colours and waste no time in joining them. " I can't believe the ball is tomorrow!" Kate squeals. " It's crazy! we've all dreamed of this for so long, and now it's finally here. Ari, do you think your mate will be there?" Sarah adds with Mischief in her voice. " Who knows." I reply , Some people take years to find their fated mate. Not everyone is as lucky as you guys!" My best friends finding out they were fated mates had to be one of the best things ever! They have been glued to each other since we were toddlers, never one without the other. Kate tured eighteen first, and then, four weeks later, we had a sleepover to celebrate Sarah's birthday. As soon as midnight hit, they knew. I'm so happy for my friends, but it does make me feel like a bit of a third wheel now, which is why my brother asked his friend to be my date to the ball. My brother and dad are both fierce pack warriors and have always been overprotective when it comes to me. I've never been allowed to date, and any boys that ever showed interest were scared away by Aiden very quickly. Alex is really only going with me as a favour to Aiden and more of a babysitter than date, I know he has no interest in me. Looking at the polish colours, I settle on a baby pink, which will go nicely with my dress. My mother is a very talented dressmaker and is always busy this time of year with orders for the ball. I was over the moon when she showed me the gown she had designed for me. A long mermaid style dress with a dusty pink satin and sheer lace over the top. Little crystals lined the plunging neckline and along the lace sleeves that cover my arms. Taking a seat next to my friends, we let the nail techs get to work, making idle chit-chat about how we think tomorrow will be. Every unmated wolf dreams of finding their special someone at the holiday ball, and I wonder if I should be so lucky. My thoughts are cut short when I hear my phone buzzing in my purse. Pulling it out, I open the text and see it's from Alex. Hey Ariah. I'm really sorry but I can no longer accompany you to the holiday ball. I just found out Christa is my mate, so I will be taking her now. I hope you understand Tell your brother I'm sorry. Alex. What!? No! I can't go to the ball without a date. How embarrassing would that be! I feel tears starting to form in the corners of my eyes. I can't believe this. " Ari, is everything ok? you are crying." I look at Kate and try to smile. " Alex just ditched me, I don't have a date for tomorrow now. I won't be able to go." I say, feeling devastated at the thought. " Oh Ari, I'm sorry. But don't be silly, of course you are still going! You weren't even interested in him. The three of us will go together and have the best night." Kate says with a sympathetic smile. " Hey, you never know. You might find your mate tomorrow and the. you will be like 'Alex who?'" Sarah adds, trying to lighten the mood. Once we are finished, I say goodbye to my friends and they tell me they will pick me up at five o'clock tomorrow. Arriving home, I head straight to my bedroom, not really in the mood to talk to anyone. Climbing into my bed, I pull the big fluffy comforter over me and slip into a restless slumber, wondering what tomorrow will bring.
