Rosie’s second birthday
I am currently at Rosie's second birthday party, held in the Fisher's backyard. Abby, and Dylan are the proud parents to Rosie. I can't help but marvel at Abby and Dylan's journey, starting a family unintentionally just before completing high school. Their story is a testament to the resilience and strength of their relationship. At first, the news of Abby's pregnancy came as a surprise to everyone. We were all still figuring out our own paths, trying to navigate the transition from high school to adulthood. But Abby and Dylan faced the situation head-on, showing unwavering love and support for each other. Watching them throughout the years, I have seen their unwavering commitment to their daughter and to each other. Despite the challenges they faced as young parents, they embraced their roles with determination and grace. Here we are celebrating Rosie’s second birthday. It's such a joyous occasion, seeing how much Rosie has grown since I last saw her. The backyard is adorned with colourful decorations, and there's a large table filled with delicious treats and a beautiful birthday cake. The atmosphere is filled with laughter and children's excitement as they run around, playing games, and enjoying the festivities. Abby's parents have always been incredibly welcoming, and they have opened their home for this special celebration. It's heart warming to see them interact with Rosie and all the other kids, ensuring everyone is having a great time. Abby and Dylan, although not married, live next door to each other, making it convenient for both families to come together for occasions like this. They have always been supportive of each other, co-parenting Rosie with so much love and care. I admire their dedication and how they've created a beautiful family dynamic. As I glance around, I spot Abby and Dylan chatting with other parents, sharing stories about their children, and smiling proudly. Rosie, dressed in an adorable birthday outfit, is the centre of attention, surrounded by her friends and family. She's giggling and having a blast, clearly enjoying her special day. I can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia, reminiscing about our high school days and how far we have come. Time flies and seeing Abby and Dylan as parents fills me with a mixture of happiness and awe. They have embraced this journey with grace and determination, always putting Rosie's happiness and well-being first. I take a moment to soak in the joyous atmosphere, appreciating the love and unity surrounding us. It's occasions like this that remind me of the beauty of friendship and the power of family, chosen or otherwise. I am grateful to be a part of Rosie's life and to witness the joy she brings to those around her. “Wow birthday parties are hectic.” I say to Abby who joins me. “You can say that again.” She responds. “Have you managed to find a place?” she asks me after a while. I have been in search for a new place to live. Our hostel block had a major leak issue right before the previous semester ended, causing quite a bit of trouble. The administration strongly advised us to find alternative accommodation for the upcoming year due to the university's decision to renovate the entire hostel. It's been a bit challenging trying to find a suitable place that meets my needs and preferences. I have been exploring various options, browsing through listings, and reaching out to potential landlords. The thought of moving to a new place brings a mix of excitement and apprehension. “I found a place ten minutes off campus. I will check it out in a few days.” I respond. “Oh that’s amazing.” Abby exclaims. “Not really.” I respond in a disappointing tone. “Why’s that?” Abby asks with concern. “The place I found is a shared apartment. I was hoping to find an apartment that’s not shared.” “How many other people will be there and how big is the place?” She asks. “Just one other person, and it has two self-contained bedrooms, an open plan living room and kitchen.” I say. “That should be alright, isn’t it?” Abby asks with a raised eyebrow. “Yesss I guess so but I am not sure I want to share an apartment with a stranger. It would have been easier if it were any of my friends not someone I don’t know.” I explain to her. “Well, you will eventually get to know the person and maybe even like them.” she shrugs. “Yeahh…. We shall see about that.” I know most of our friends are away and only Will, Jay and myself are around but Jay isn’t here at the party. Where could he be? “Where is Jay? I thought he would be here.” I bring myself to ask. “Jay…….” Abby utters his name with shock, I know she wasn’t expecting me to ask. “He said he would come through later. I think he has something he is doing.” “Abby I know you and Dylan are still tip toeing around our breakup.” “It wasn’t our decision that he comes later, he decided it himself.” I respond. Since Jay and I officially broke up, everyone has been behaving strange around us. “Oh I see.” I say. “Babe are you okay?” She asks. I let out a sigh and then look Abby in the eyes. “I miss him so much. Jay has always been in my life since I was 15 years old, and we have been seeing each other be it secretly or openly for four years and the past one year has been hard.” Tears start to build up in my eyes. “Getting together with Dylan is the biggest mistake I have ever made and that led to our breakup.” I say before the tears finally fall but I wipe them off immediately. “Babe….. I am sorry you feel like….” “No stop.” I say with sniffs in between, “We all need to accept that I made a huge mistake. Please stop keeping him away whenever I come around okay.” “Okay, we shall stop.” Abby gives me a weary smile. “I will hold you to that.” I smile. “Now let’s get some cake before it is finished. I always enjoy your mom’s baking. I didn’t know Mrs. McClain was good too.” As the day goes on, I can't help but feel blessed to have such wonderful friends and to be able to celebrate special moments like Rosie's second birthday. The laughter, the smiles, and the happiness fill my heart, making me realize that these are the moments that truly matter in life.
