Chapter 3

The intensity of the pain I am feeling right at this very moment is almost unbearable. Hearing those hurtful words from the person I value the most makes it extra painful. I was crying the whole drive home and he didn’t even do anything to calm me down. I was crying ugly inside his car, beside him but all he did was drive me home. No words of comfort. No nothing at all. I wiped my tears with my handkerchief and immediately got out of his car the moment he pulled over our gate. I didn’t look at him, nor thank him. I didn’t need a ride home. I needed him to take his words back. But I know he wouldn’t. And it’s all my fault. Eugene saw me as I entered the house. His eyes widened when he saw me in this state and walked to me. “Hey, what’s wrong?” He asked, worried. I smiled weakly and shook my head. “This is nothing. I’m just emotional because I drank a little.” I replied and immediately walked to my room. I did nothing but cried the whole night. No wink of sleep. I didn’t even notice the time until Eugene came in and called me for breakfast. He looked at me with wide eyes. “Eury?! Are you alright?” He asked. I looked back at him and wiped the tears on my cheek. “I’m not going to eat breakfast.” I told him as I got up and went straight to the bathroom to freshen up…even though I know it won’t do anything about my physical appearance right now. I shut the door and sighed. Today, I’m just going to find a company to work with so I could preoccupy myself with work. Or maybe I would just pretend to apply in Nildex so I could see him. Damn. I want him back. I need him back. I know what I did was unforgivable but I’m not going to back down. My eyes are set on the goal. I want Justin back to me. I could melt his anger with my love. I could ease the pain with my love. That, I’m certain of. I looked at myself in the mirror and realized one thing. When I left the Philippines, how miserable was Justin? How wasted did he look? How devastated did he feel? It hurts me that he’s doing this to me now but what about him? What has he felt when I left him? Based on the bitterness in his voice last night, I know he’s been through a lot of pain as well. Four long years and I could still see the pain in his eyes. Last night, I’ve seen him break in front of me and I couldn’t tend to look into his hurt eyes. I can’t see the pain that I had caused him. I fixed myself to make myself look presentable. I don’t need to show everyone my broken self. I can just keep it to myself and pretend that I am alright. It’s my own problem that I needed to fix. It’s my own problem that I needed to get over with. But will I be able to let go of Justin Villanueva? I love him. After all these times, I still love him. I wouldn’t cry if I don’t. I wouldn’t cry if I’m alright. I put on light make up and prepared to go down. I need to move early today since I need to get my car from the club. “Where are you going?” Mom asked me as soon as I walked downstairs. They are all there—my parents, Euron, Eurik, Eugene and Eunique. They all looked at me, waiting for my response. I smiled like nothing happened last night. “I’m going to start applying, Mom, Dad.” I replied. “I’ll search the whole metro for a job that will fit me.” Dad smiled at me. “Now, that’s the spirit!” He beamed. “But you should go to Nildex first. They’re the ones offering the best position for you.” I nodded. He doesn’t have to say that. I am really going to Nildex to see the love of my life. I am going to only apply in Nildex because I only want to work there. I don’t have a plan. I don’t have a plan for him to get back with me. But I am getting into it. The first step is to get closer to him. And Nildex is the only way. “I better go, Dad, Mom.” I bowed and walked out of the house. I need to go to the club now. I need to get my car. I hailed a cab and dropped by the club. The valet immediately saw me and walked to me. “Your car, Miss?” He asked. I nodded. He rubbed the back of his head. “A man got your car last night, Ma’am. He told me he knows you so I gave him the car.” He replied. I narrowed my eyes at him. “Did he tell you his name?” I asked. He thought for a moment. “Justin…Villanueva?” He replied unsure. My heart beat faster. “Justin Villanueva?” I asked. He pursed his lips. “That’s what I can remember, Miss.” He replied. I nodded. “Okay, thanks.” I replied and turned to my phone, calling Ashley. Why would Justin take my car? And why hasn’t he given it to me? Is he also planning something? Is he also thinking of doing something? “Ash,” I spoke when she answered the call. “Eury, why are you calling so early in the morning?” She asked in her husky voice. “Baby, who’s that? Let’s sleep more.” I can hear Kristoff’s voice in the background, too. I rolled my eyes. “Tell your boyfriend to ask Justin where my car is.” I ordered Ashley. “What?!” Ashley asked, surprised. “Justin took your car?” I sighed. “Yes. I’m on my way to his company now.” I replied, not knowing if I’m pissed off or just really happy that I have found another excuse to talk to him. I heard Ashley ask Kristoff where Justin is. “You can just go to Nildex this morning. Kristoff said Justin goes to work before eight in the morning.” I looked at my watch. It’s almost eight in the morning. I thanked the valet and walked near the cab stop. Now, everything’s going so well. I hailed another cab and went straight to Nildex, taking all my requirements with me. I stared at the façade of the building. It’s still the same old façade I have been seeing four years ago. The glass walls, the revolving glass door of the entrance, everything is still the same. I took a deep breath and walked inside. The receptionist, Miss Jessica, smiled at me. “Hi, Miss! How may I help you?” She asked me as soon as I arrived at the receiving area. I smiled at her. “I’m Eurydice Mercado. I’m going to apply for your vacant HR Head position.” I told her. She nodded and listed something. “Okay, Miss. Mr. Justin Villanueva and the board members are waiting for you, Ma’am.” She spoke. “They’re waiting for me?” I asked. She smiled. “They’re waiting for applicants, I mean.” She laughed and called someone. “Irene, please usher Miss Mercado to the conference room now.” Irene smiled at me and nodded at Jessica. “This way, Miss Mercado.” She told me and led me to the conference room. My heart beats faster every step towards the conference room. Justin Villanueva is waiting in there. He’s going to be the one to interview me. How nervous could I be? Irene stopped at a huge door. Encrypted above it are the words Conference Room. “You’re our first walk-in applicant for the day. They are waiting for you.” She smiled at me as she opened the door and told the people inside about my presence. “Come in,” I heard Justin’s faint voice. Irene opened the door wider revealing the persons inside. There are three people waiting inside. When I thought about board members, I thought the people would be in their forties or anything but I was wrong. In the middle was Justin who was in his natural black suit with gray neck tie. To his right is a man with small eyes and round face who’s wearing a dark blue suit. To his left is a man with high cheek bones and a beautiful smile who’s wearing a gray suit. Justin stared at me with his dark eyes. He didn’t seem so surprised to see me here but his stare was all of his anger. I know, I can feel the daggers digging into my skin. “Miss?” The man with high cheekbones raised his brow. “I’m Marion Villanueva.” He smiled. “This is Xian Villanueva and that’s the CEO, Justin Villanueva. Please take your seat.” “I’m Eurydice Mercado.” I replied. Xian Villanueva looked at me and smiled. “Can we see your resume first?” He asked me and I gladly handed it to him. He browsed through my resume with a smirk on his face. “So you studied and worked in New York?” He asked me. I nodded. “Yes. I lived in New York for four years, Mr. Villanueva.” Now, I’m kind of confused because all of them are Mr. Villanueva. Marion Villanueva smiled at me. “You must be so experienced.” He commented. I smiled. “I can’t say that, sir.” I replied humbly. He smiled and turned to Justin. “What do you think, Justin?” He asked. Justin pursed his lips in a thin line before looking into me. “The first quality I am looking for in my employees is loyalty to the words being said…” he paused and set his eyes on mine. “I need an employee who’s true to his or her words.” Xian and Marion Villanueva looked at me, confused of what Justin is saying. “Are you a woman with a word of honor, Miss Mercado?” Justin asked. I bit my lip and stayed quiet. He smirked. “Until you can answer me, you’re on the waiting list.” He said and looked away.
