When she’d completed this task, the servant bell rang. Rachel stalked to the edge of the rooftop and peered down to the alley. One dark head was visible, but the clothes seemed different. Oh, well, it wouldn’t be the first time that Cyrene had swapped her outfit for something in better condition. Rachel flung out the elevator chassis and began cranking the elevator down. After feeling two tugs to the rope like a fish hooked on a line, Rachel began cranking up the chassis. Cyrene must have had a good haul because it felt heavy. The rain trickling down her neck didn’t chill her to the bone, but the contents of the makeshift elevator did: a stranger.
