Pride 11: The Sin I Would Admit To

1089 Words
PRIDE My eyes open at the sound of burning paper. It takes a while for my sleepy vision to focus on the note floating in front of me. It’s a fire message. The way my brothers and I communicate.  Hesitantly, I glance to Jessie’s sleeping form cuddled up in a thick blanket. She’s a heavy sleeper and didn’t stir from the sound of the message.  It’s still quite early. Six in the morning exactly two weeks after the morphing demon attacked her. After that encounter more and more demons have been coming after her. She was taking it all very well mostly because I intercept the demons before Jessie even noticed them. Slowly, I reach for the note and the fire vanishes leaving only the letter. I sit up from my bed and unfold the paper. Without needing to read the contents I know it’s from Gluttony. The hand writing is uncanny.  Brother,  How is everything? I hope you and your human are doing well. We haven’t had a chance to meet again. We’ve all been very busy.  I heard there was an attack on your girl. Just last night there was an attack on mine as well. Three lesser demons, it injured my human badly. You need not worry. I’ve healed him.  Nevertheless, let’s meet.  Envy says you’re busy being frisky with humans but I know better. That’s not your style.  Have lunch with me. I’ll be bringing Tomas. We’re hungry for Japanese.  Gluttony My eyebrows furrow at Gluttony’s words. It’s unusual for three lesser demons to attack all at once. They weren’t an organized bunch. Most times mindless and incredibly stupid. Unless, a greater demon is controlling them. My eyes shift to Jessie still very much asleep with not a care of the world around her. I feel my chest warm at the mere sight of my human. I wouldn’t let anything harm her... yet a few days ago she was scratched up pretty badly. I let out a sigh knowing exactly what Gluttony was feeling. The worry for his human must be severe for him to send a message this way.  A few hours later and Jessie finally begins to steer from her sleep. She grumbles out a few choice words and sits up. Jessie scratches her chin sleepily and falls back into her pillows. She’ll do this a few more times before fully waking.  It’s exactly twenty minutes later when she climbs out of bed. I don’t dare speak to her before she does. It’s a silent understanding that Jessie is not a morning person and if I engage her in conversation before she’s ready, she’ll start to resemble a hellhound. “Morning.” Jessie finally says eyes still blinking slowly as if chasing away the sleep. “Good morning.” I respond testing the waters.  She yawns loudly and sits down again only this time it’s on my bed and she’s sitting directly on my thigh. I swallow anxiously feeling my cheeks heat up. Jessie still hasn’t realized it yet.  I reach for her unruly hair and push it out of her face. “Jess?”  “Hmmm?”  “Join me and meet my brother for lunch.” This successfully wakes her and before I know it two soft to touch arms wrap around my neck. I gasp in surprise her closeness was a little distracting.  I understood her excitement. It wasn’t everyday I allowed her to meet my brothers. She knows her importance and the need to keep her hidden. “You said-“  “It’s Gluttony. I trust him with my life.” I look at her and hope she understands that when I mean life it meant her. Jessie nods her head looking equal parts excited and nervous. “Okay. Let me just get ready. I want to make a good impression.”  I try not to be bothered but in the next few hours, Jessie decided to dress up well. She put make up, perfume and a flattering dress that flowed down just above her knees. Is she dressing up for Gluttony? Why was she putting on this much effort when I know she prefers pajamas and cotton pants. Irritating little human. JESSIE It’s lunch time and I nervously pull at my dress.  Meeting Gluttony is a very big deal. He’s the closest to Pride and Pride respects him the most out of all of his brothers. From his stories alone, I’ve come to admire him as well. Apart from that, Gluttony is the one sin I’d be proud to admit to. Maybe I could have an eating contest with him?  I feel Pride’s sharp watchful eyes staring me down as I pat my hair for the nth time. We were a little bit early to the restaurant where we decided to meet because I insisted that we had to be punctual.  “Will you relax? Continue this and I’ll assume you want Gluttony as your Prince. Wouldn’t want me to be jealous, Jess.” Pride chides playfully but there’s a warning to his tone. He might be extremely prideful but he was not above possessiveness.  I open my mouth to speak when a massive man made purely of muscle enters the small Japanese restaurant.  My jaw drops.  Was this Gluttony? He looks nothing like how I pictured him to be. He’s too old as well. Lust and Pride looked to be in their mid twenties but Gluttony looks like he could be forty. It can’t be him- The question dies in my throat when I notice a tremendously tall yet slim man behind the mass of muscle.  Oh. That’s Gluttony.  The tall unearthly handsome man smiles immediately when he sees Pride. Pride doesn’t waste a second and meets his brother half way. They clap each other on the back happily.  I use this time to observe Gluttony. He’s extremely attractive although no where near Lust’s tempting features or Pride’s confident beauty.  Gluttony is different. He reminds me strangely of spring and it’s gentle breeze. Pride’s favored brother has the greenest eyes that I’ve ever seen and the softest looking brown hair.  I’m interrupted from my careful inspection of the other Prince by Gluttony’s human. A large man with arms as big as my entire body. He grins cheekily and offers a massive hand for me to shake.  I take it and smile at him. My hand is engulfed with his sweaty ones. The two Princes approach the two of us and Gluttony makes no move to approach me. He  smiles kindly anyway. Gluttony must know of Pride’s rule of no touching.  “You must be Jessie.” He says the corners of his eyes crinkling because of his smile.  He has an infectious smile. “Hi. You’re Pride’s favorite brother.”  Gluttony chuckles at my words. “That I know. This is my human, Tomas.” The hulking man beside me nods his head. “Hey, Jessie.”  “Nice to meet you, Tomas.” I greeted cheerfully. I like them already.
