Chapter 4

CHAPTER FOUR I tried to sleep-I could swear on my life that I tried-but it was twelve-thirty in the morning and I was still awake, staring at the ceiling above me. Everything about him just being out with Joe didn’t feel quite right. They weren’t friends and it was already past twelve in the morning. I shifted, cuddling the pillow he usually laid on and buried my nose into it, the mixed scent of black walnut and cedar hitting my nose. My eyes closed, letting the scent of his shampoo waft deeper through my nostrils, numbing me with calmness. Choosing not to focus on my own negative thoughts, I let the beautiful memories of us playing in a loop in my mind and it must have been around two in the morning when my phone rung and much to my surprise, it was Dane. “Dane?” I said the moment I picked up but all I could hear was the loud music in the background. “Am I speaking to Mrs. Wilson?” an unfamiliar voice questioned. “Why do you have my husband’s phone? Is this a call for ransom? Because if-“ “This is not a call for ransom, Ma’am. Your husband is too drunk and he asked me to call you,” The guy replied.  Dane was too drunk in a club at two in the morning? Where was Joe?   “Okay. What club is it?” “Double X,” Wait, that was not a new club. I’d heard of it a couple of times from Raymond but I’d never been there myself. Maybe they just had drinks at whatever new club they were supposed to go and then decided to drop by Double X. “Alright. I’m on my way. Could you do me a favor and please give him a glass of water?” That ought to sober him up a little before I got there. “Yes, Ma’am,” He answered. I cut off the call, getting off the bed and running straight o my closet. I grabbed a knee length trench coat wearing it over my pajamas before grabbing my car keys. Where the hell was the driver anyway? Wasn’t he supposed to remain with Dane in case something like that happened? I got into my car, and drove to the house next door, blaring the horn a couple of times. Considering Cassy’s husband had been with Joe, she’d want to know about this. After several impatient minutes, Joe walked out of the gate in his sleeping robe and looking like he had just woken up, much to my shock. “Channel?” He seemed surprised too. “I thought you were with Dane out at the new club. Did you come back earlier?” “O-Out? What are you talking about? We had dinner with Dane and then my wife and I drove straight home right after. Dane said he had something to take care of at the office before he came home. I-Is everything okay?” A lie. Dane lied to me about his whereabouts and who he was with. I gripped the steering wheel tight, trying to keep my nerves calm as I forced a small, reassuring smile on my face,” Everything is fine. I’m sorry for waking you up so early in the morning,” “No, problem,” I watched him go back inside before I let out a shaky breath. How could Dane lie to me like that? Every part of me was shaking with rage and all I could wonder was why he’d lied. Was he with her tonight? This Cynthia, woman? Was Dane…cheating on me? No, I could not start thinking like that. Maybe he just wanted some time alone. I took a deep breath then exhaled before starting the car again, after keying the club’s name on the GPS. Twenty minutes later and I found myself outside Double X and instantly felt my body tense up. What would I find when I walk inside there? Dane in someone else’s arms? I shook the thought off my mind, walking in while calling my husbands’ phone and thankfully enough, the same person who had called earlier, picked. “Its me again. Where are you?” The club wasn’t as noisy as it was before. This was why I had stopped clubbing. The noise and crowds had just been something I couldn’t handle. Someone could end up puking on you or perhaps stealing from or even harassing you. “Just come straight to the bar counter please. My tag reads Julian,” He instructed and I changed direction heading to the bar. He was easy to find and actually turned out to be pleasantly friendly. “Come with me,” he said, already leading the way upstairs to the set of VIP rooms. “Thank you so much, Julian,” “No problem. Here is your husband’s phone. I figured if I were to leave it with him, someone could take advantage of it. I have to say something though. You husband really does love you a lot,” he said. “Really? How did you know that?” I couldn’t help a smile on my face. “Well, given that he is young, only bought the expensive whiskeys and is actually good looking, many women were trying to take a shot at him. But he stood his ground when he was drunk. He would be like,’ I’m only loyal to Cynthia, the love of my life,’. Isn’t it so great to have a man that loves you so much?” He questioned. I felt ice drop in my stomach walls, travelling all the way through out of my body, every nerve growing rigid. “I’m Channel,” I whispered. “Hmmm?” The bartender gave me a confused look. “I’m his wife but my name isn’t Cynthia,” I replied, my lower lip trembling. “W-Whaaaaaaaaat? Maybe I misheard,” He said but it was too late. Everything I’d been trying to deny, was suddenly clear to me in broad daylight. The man I loved so much, didn’t love me back like I thought. Instead, he was obsessed with someone else. I had him but not his heart and nothing could have broken me tonight more that this. “C-Can I have a shot? Something strong,” I inquired, feeling like I was about to lose to my calm. I could look at him straight in the eye, completely sober and I hoped a shot could make me less mad at him right now.
