Alex sighed and rubbed his eyes in irritation. He could still hear the girl’s loud protests all the way up until the guard closed the hall door. That blasted female! She was just too damn weird. First, she threw herself, quite literally, at him. Then, what did she have to say for herself? That she wanted a f*cking light for her cigarette! And if that wasn’t bad enough, but she had been thrown into the dungeon for depicting him as a wild beast.
What the actual hell was that about? He shook his head and continued walking down the hall towards his mother’s sitting room.
No one had ever insulted him in such a ridiculous way.
“Reckless, stupid, ignorant woman,” he muttered as he pushed the door open.
His mother had wanted to talk with him about the matter privately and he had wholeheartedly agreed. Anyway, he just wanted to get away from that thing. He had still ached from her incessant screeching. The woman had made such a vulgar scene when his mother announced that she was a royal guest—indefinitely.
Alex paced the length of the room, seething. That chit even had the nerve to call him rude in front of all his subjects. He clenched his hands into fists. Unbidden memories began to resurface from his childhood and he felt lightheaded. Alex let out a ragged breath and continued to walk around his mother’s room. In an attempt to calm down, he began studying the various paintings that lined his mother’s room.
Looking at a delicate composed seascape, he mumbled in deep thought, “What did she say her name was?”
Abigail. Yes, Abigail… Celeste?
Whatever her name was, he knew his mother had taken an instant liking to her. Giving up on the art, he walked towards the plush sofa and flopped down in defeat. His mother, she was never going to let this go. Not when she had witnessed that woman touching him and he didn’t react as usual. And wasn’t that odd? Just who was she anyway?
“What are you thinking about?”
Alex jerked upright. He hadn’t even heard his mother entering the room. She stared down at him with a wide grin on her face. Alex’s shoulders slumped while exhaling a deep breath.
“About how to put that brat back into the dungeon,” he replied with a beguiling smile.
Of course, he knew his mother would never allow it but still—the idea was very appealing.
How did she manage to escape in the first place?
He pondered the various escape routes as his mother took a seat beside of him and grabbed his hand. “Alexis, you can't! Surely, you don’t want to make your mother sad. Besides, I think it’s possible…” her words trailed off as she looked up at him with a pleading expression.
She always knew just what to say to make him feel like s**t and then he would eventually capitulate. Abruptly, he stood and shoved his hands into his pockets. After taking a few steps, he turned and leveled her such a look that she had to lower her eyes. Alex pushed a hand through his hair. He didn’t like using dominance on his mother, but really this whole situation was just too much and he needed answers.
“Who is she?” he asked in a demanding tone.
“She’s… she’s a psychiatrist, Alexis.”
She cleared her throat and began to nervously finger the gold threads that were embroidered on her dark green skirt. Alex nodded, vaguely remembering his mother conversing with his secretary about making arrangements for a “special” guest. He never thought that this was the guest that she was referring too. Bringing a human into their world was nothing short of a disaster in the making. He tilted his head and one of his brows rose into an arrogant arch.
“If you needed to talk to someone mother, surely you didn’t have to resort into bringing a lowly human here.”
She scoffed at him. “She is for you, Alex.”
He knew that already. Who else could she have possibly been for? No one in this whole damned castle had any issues—well, except for him. However, this wasn’t just about him having some “hang ups” as his brother liked to call them. This was about the safety of his people. Humans were not trustworthy and dangerous. There was absolutely no way in hell he was going to let a human roam free around his castle. She had to go back. He gave his mother one last look and snorted in disdain as he turned to walk towards the door.
“I am not going to appoint her,” he said over his shoulder.
“Alexis!” she shouted, making him halt in his tracks. “You have to, my son. Please, just think about it. No one from our world has been able to help.”
He gritted his teeth and said hoarsely, “Well, she hasn’t either.”
His mother came up behind him and laid a gentle hand on his shoulder. It took every ounce of Alex’s resolve not to slap her hand away. As if sensing his terror, she withdrew her hand and stepped back. “She hasn’t even started yet. Let's give her a chance. Please.”
Alex rubbed his temples and groaned. This wasn’t a good idea. “Mother, I really don’t want to discuss this any further. Besides, I was just fine a while ago.”
“Yes. That's exactly what I am mean! You were perfectly fine when she touched you.”
Alex turned and looked at his mother. She looked so broken and desperate. He could feel his resolve starting to crumble. It wasn’t as if she was entirely wrong either. He hadn’t reacted negatively to that woman’s touch. Actually, he almost felt…normal? But, Alex would never admit to being in the wrong.
He straightened and said defiantly, “It was only one time, mother.”
Her face split into a grin at the memory and nodded. She looked up at him with an asserted look and Alex felt a cold shiver go down his spine. He knew he was in trouble. His mother planted her hands on her hips.
“Exactly! That has never happened before. So, we are going to try it again.”
Alex knew he could never go against his mother. She was his one weakness and everyone knew it, including her.
In one last effort to dissuade her, he quietly asked, “Please, send her back?”
She smiled knowingly and nodded. “I will, my son. After she completes her job, I will personally send her back.”
With that, she waved her hand to dismiss him and he walked out of the room feeling like a child.
“Well, she had better finish soon,” he grumbled as he trudged down the corridor.
Humans had a distinct smell and Alex hated it with every fiber of his being. Moreover, that puny human shouldn't be his psychiatrist. While most of the things that had transpired baffled and confused Alex, one thing was crystal clear. His brother had to be the one to help that woman to escape.
“Louis…” he said through gritted teeth.
He raked a hand through his disheveled hair. He could never hurt his little brother. And even though Louis was quite the troublemaker, Alex always thought that he would turn into a great adviser in time. The only problem was that Louis loathed to work. Alex chuckled darkly and decided that maybe his little brother had a little too much time on his hands. Besides, Louis owed him a few thousand favors anyway. It wouldn’t hurt to enlist his help to resolve this situation. Stopping short of entering his room, Alex shifted his gaze over to the armored guard.
“Where is Louis?”
“He is in the dungeon, Your Majesty. His friend is also there.”
So, that’s how she got out. That little…
“I don't care about the friend. Tell my brother that we need to talk.”
“As you command, Your Highness.”
Alex heaved a deep sigh, as he opened the door to his room. He needed to be alone. So many thoughts were racing through his brain that he craved peace and quiet more than anything.
