CHAPTER 1 - Graduating
Anita Baker, a 24-year-old woman, had just graduated from university. She was the eldest daughter of her parents and had five younger sisters. Her father was a banker, and her mother was a trader.
Anita had fair skin and a beautiful figure with curvaceous hips. She stood at six feet tall. Among her sisters, she was the only one with fair skin, while the rest had darker complexions, some with a fair brown hue.
She resembled her mother but was considered even more beautiful. Her father often accused her mother of infidelity, doubting that he was her biological father due to her fair complexion. Her mother remained silent about these accusations, assuring Anita that she was indeed his daughter.
Her father even threatened to conduct a paternity DNA test, unable to comprehend why she was so different from her sisters.
Anita's immediate younger sister, Flora, a 22-year-old dark-skinned beauty, disliked her, despite being two years older. Four of her sisters harbored resentment towards her, except for her youngest sister, Glory, who genuinely loved her.
The saying "blood is thicker than water" seemed to hold no truth in Anita's case.
Despite his accusations of infidelity, Mr. Joshua Baker continued to support Anita's education, sending her to university to study business administration.
Anita was overjoyed as she completed her final exams and received her results, which were outstanding.
Due to her father's constant accusations against her calm mother, Mrs. Tonia Baker, Anita had refused to engage in romantic relationships. She would go on dates but ultimately reject any proposals of love.
Her best friend from university, Temisa Patrick, encouraged her to give love a chance, but Anita refused saying, "My father constantly accuses my mother of cheating on him, yet he still goes back to her and impregnates her to have us six children. Mother says he loves her, but his daily insults don't show us that he truly loves her," she confided in Temisa during their second year of university.
Many handsome and wealthy men were drawn to Anita, but she felt they were only interested in using her. She feared that once they had their way, they would discard her or accuse her of infidelity, just as her father did to her mother, driving them both into depression.
Anita sat in a private room with Temisa, preparing for their final convocation.
"Anita, I'm so happy! Finally, we'll be leaving this school. I can't explain how much I've missed home," Temisa said.
"Me too," Anita replied faintly, knowing it wasn't entirely true. She hated home and knew she would face her father's constant insults towards her mother again. Her three younger sisters, Flora, Esther, and Favour, would likely torment her, calling her an outcast because they were jealous of her looks, as if it were her fault.
Anita shook her head sadly, and Temisa noticed.
"What's wrong, girlfriend? You don't seem happy, even though you're graduating as one of the best students in our university today?" Temisa asked, standing up from her seat in front of the mirror and walking over to Anita, who was sitting on the couch.
Anita shook her head once more and looked away, not responding.
"What's the problem, dear?" Temisa asked again, approaching and crouching in front of her, even though she knew the reason for Anita's sadness. Anita had confided in her about her hatred for men and her perception of them as scumbags.
"Don't worry. When I get home, I can talk to my mother about letting you live with us, even if it's just for your IT work, until you find a better job to support yourself," Temisa offered.
"Thank you," Anita smiled faintly. "You're welcome. You know you're like a sister to me, so you don't have to worry or cry much. Graduating with a first-class degree is no joke, and you should be happy. Today is your most blessed day. Come sit here, let me apply some makeup on your face."
Temisa pulled Anita to her feet, and she smiled faintly before sitting down in front of the mirror in their shared private room.
"You know I don't like makeup," Anita said as she watched Temisa open one of her makeup kits and start preparing her brushes.
"I know, but today is your lucky day. You should look sweet when collecting your awards as the best graduating student, so no excuses. Just do this for me, okay? It will make you smile throughout today and lighten your mood."
"Okay," Anita replied, staring at her beautiful reflection in the mirror while Temisa began applying a beautiful brown powder to her face.
She started with Anita's eyelashes, then moved on to her cheeks and nose, applying the beautiful makeup powder. As she finished, transforming Anita's appearance, Anita was stunned by her new look in the mirror.
She had never worn makeup before, and staring at her new reflection, she was speechless. She now understood why Temisa had so many boyfriends.
Temisa was the daughter of a billionaire, her father working for the Benson Group of Companies, one of the wealthiest families in their country.
Anita had read about the Benson family and wished she could work for them. This was a major reason why she had studied so hard, reading day and night to graduate as one of the top students in her university.
She had considered asking Temisa to help her request an application from her father at one of the Benson Group companies, but she knew it might seem like she was trying to gain favor, which she didn't deserve. It could also make others perceive her as a gold digger or someone who would sell her body for favors, so she decided not to ask Temisa for her father's help.
"All done now. Don't you see how sweet you look in the mirror? Oh my god! I'm the best makeup artist on campus," Temisa fanned herself with her hand while Anita smiled.
"Don't overhype yourself too much because of me. Yes, you tried, but I still don't like makeup," Anita admitted.
"Tar! Shut up. I'm hoping a handsome guy will see you today and ask you out," Temisa giggled. Everything about her revolved around guys. She changed boyfriends every month like pants.
She was ruthless when it came to multiple relationships and didn't care what other women thought.
She didn't believe in love, preferring to spend her time dating different men. While she never admitted to sleeping with any of the men she dated, it was hard to believe, as she was always seen with different men, sometimes at the beach, sometimes in a restaurant, and sometimes in a nightclub, taking photos with them. Yet, she claimed to be a virgin, after Anita also told her she was a virgin.
It was difficult to believe, as Anita didn't believe her. A virgin was supposed to be calm and keep to herself, so no guy would use her. But Temisa dressed provocatively, wearing bum shorts, crop tops, and all sorts of seductive and tempting clothing.
Temisa was a dark-skinned beauty, with a curvy figure like Anita's, but she wasn't jealous of Anita's fair skin. They were in the same department, studying the same course, which had made them best friends. However, Anita was more intelligent than Temisa, while Temisa was the party-hard type.
"Let's go out now. I'm sure most of our families would have arrived," Temisa said as she quickly packed her remaining belongings and makeup kits into her box and zipped it closed.
She had rented the room they were staying in, so they spent most of their time there, even though the school was on holiday.
It was their final year, a time to say goodbye. Anita dragged out all her bags and boxes, as she was going back home after the award ceremony.
They stepped out to witness the university's final event, the awarding of the best graduating student. Anita Baker was called to the stage and awarded a first-class degree and recognition for her academic excellence.
Temisa beamed with pride as she clapped for her friend, who stepped out from her seat among the crowd of friends and family attending the convocation ceremony to receive her awards.
