Elle
I slipped my feet into the flip flops, pulled my hair back, and hugged his arm. He peered down at me and smiled. We walked down the stairs to the kitchen. The aroma of bacon, eggs, and pastries filled the air and my stomach grumbled. Everett led me into the dining area, and I stopped dead in my tracks and hid behind him. There were so many people! The huge table was filled on both sides, leaving two seats at the end.
“Oye, sleeping beauty!” Elias called out to me with his goofy grin and his eyes sparkling mischievously. “Better grab some grub before I eat it!” He reaches over to a bowl of biscuits and ripped into it to emphasize his statement.
Ginny came rushing at me in a red blur; her red hair braided down her back. She wore a red jumper and black sweats. She looked warm and toasty and I envied her. She grabbed my hand and pulled me to the empty seat next to her; jabbering so fast I couldn’t understand a word.
“Ginny,” I laughed. “Slow down sweetie I can’t understand you.”
She puffed her cheeks out and let out a breath. She closed her eyes and muttered to herself. Her big green eyes opened again and stared at me with a big smile.
“I said,” she said slowly. “Come sit next to me, ignore Elias he’s a big jerk face, and try the pudding it’s amazing!”
She immediately began to pile food into my plate. I stared at the huge amount and wondered if I could eat it all. Who am I kidding? I ate it all and then had more of the pudding Ginny introduced to me. I barely noticed the others staring at me while I ate doing my happy food dance; it was so good.
“So,” Denny said. I immediately looked up at him and he smiled. “What’re you kids doing today?”
I could tell he was trying to talk with me. He didn’t seem much of a small talk kind of guy. I blinked at him then looked at Everett since I had a mouth full of pudding.
“Shoppin’,” Everett said. “Elias didn’t pack very well, and she needs some clothes more suitable for our weather.”
Elias blanched at his name and looked at me closer. His face turned pink, but he smiled at me shrugged. “Sorry, Elle. I was in a bit of a panic, so I just grabbed whatever.”
“Yes, I noticed you grabbed everything out of the top two drawers of my dresser. Which are all my summer clothes. But why only like four pairs of underwear? And flip flops and one shoe?”
“I opened the drawer to empty it but when I put my hand in all these lacy things popped out and again, I panicked because I was already on red alert so I just threw whatever was in my hand into the bag and grabbed some shoes. To be honest I’m not entirely sure what I put in there.”
“Way to work under pressure,” Everett chuckled. Elias threw a piece of biscuit at him.
“Ah, boys,” Denny chided. “I don’t mind if ye go today but after that, I don’t want none of ye off the territory unless approved by me or mum. We don’t know where Artemis is nor what he’s planning. I don’t know how he’s involved or what he knows about the prophecy. But we need to be careful and vigilant.”
“Aye,” said everyone around me. He didn’t say much but when he spoke people listened to him.
“What prophecy?” I asked.
Denny smiled at me again but looked to Patricia to explain. She gave me a sweet smile, but her eyes were kind of sad.
“The prophecy that predicted our son would meet his mate and together they would conquer a great darkness that seeks to destroy us,” she said. My eyes bulged.
“What?” I muttered. “But how?”
“We have asked the elder council for guidance and will be sending two elders to meet with all of us. They should be here tomorrow,” Patricia explained emphasizing all to make sure I knew I was included. “Hopefully, we can learn something that will help guide us.”
I nodded and regretted eating so much food. Here I was acting like I’m on some vacation when my whole life just imploded. Everything I worked for was gone and now I’m in some crazy dragon tale. Patricia reached across the table and squeezed my hand. She gave me a tender smile to reassure me.
“Mum,” Ginny spoke up. “Can I go to the shops with Elle? Please, please, please?”
“No dear you have a test tomorrow, and you need to study,” she said. Ginny opened her mouth to argue. “Don’t whine, the answers no and you already went to the shops last weekend.”
“But they didn’t have what I wanted!”
“The answers No Ginny,” Patricia said sternly and gave her a look. I noticed her eyes had changed shape and the pupil had elongated and the color changed from brown to a golden rod yellow. I held in my gasp and then it was gone, and Patricia’s eyes were normal again. Ginny dropped her head at her mother’s dragon eyes and muttered grumpily under her breath.
“Don’t worry, Gin,” Everett whispered to her. “I’ll bring you back something. What were you looking for?”
“A new game for my handheld,” she said. “Bloody Death Fight Five!”
Everett nodded and shot her a wink. She smiled smugly to herself and grabbed her empty plate along with mine. She turned around and looked me over quickly.
“Come with me Elle,” she said after her appraisal. “I might have some clothes you can borrow; we look about the same size.”
I quickly checked out Ginny and I was surprised to say she did have a little booty peeking out from her jumper. I hadn’t noticed before probably because she was busy squashing me in the bed or hiding under a desk. I got up and followed her to the kitchen.
“Thanks, Gin!” Everett called after us. “I’ll get changed and meet you down here in fifteen!”
“Okay!” Ginny and I replied at the same time. We giggled at each other as she deposited the plates into the sink. She gave them a quick rinse and put them in the dishwasher.
“Mum has a rule where everyone rinses their plates and puts them in the wash. If the washers are full, then you must put the soap in, and if you go to put something in and it’s clean you have to put it away. Everyone chips in,” Ginny explained.
“That makes sense,” I agreed.
