CHAPTER THREETravelling to Southampton, Tarina thought she was definitely living in a play that she must have written herself. When things had been very dull at home and she was struggling after her mother’s death with the housework, with the help only of a rather stupid girl from the village, she had told herself stories. They were usually adventure tales in which she travelled to strange places all over the world. Often at dinnertime she would ask her father about some country she had been visiting in her mind.
